TD5 goin nowhere!

Ok, I pussyfooted around this asking for titbits and now managed to get hold of a haynes manual which doesn't look like its going to help too much so here goes:

I was brought in to help with this issue some time after the start so I cannot clarify whether somebody did something proper klever like connecting jumpleads the wrong way around or suchlike so please bear with me on this.

I am led to believe that my friend went to start his TD5 after a period of months of no use. Of course the battery was flat so he either removed the battery to charge OR may have tried a jump. Anyhow, in the event he gets no response from the remote keyfob and then tries the manual key immo reset procedure. He gets no bleeps at all from the horn no matter how long he leaves the key in the first position. He gets nothing from the key except "Some" dashboard lights. He ascertains at some point that the main fuse has blown (maybe after the attempted jump). This main fuse has now been replaced and then he calls "Muggins" here to pick up the mantle.

I have established indeed that the ignition gives nothing but some (not all) dash lights. Interestingly the glow plug one never comes on even for the "test" period when most others come on. I have tried putting a feed directly to the starter solenoid and am able to crank the starter motor. Of course she doesn't spring to life as the extra services required are not being provided (I'm guessing fuel and probably glow plugs).

Does this information sound familiar to anyone and can you shed light on what is likely to have gone wrong at all please? I will try to answer further questions that come along but please bear with me as the car is still in spain and I am back in UK on my days off.

Do we assume you now have a fully charged battery in the car?

Firstly switch the ignition on, then leave it there for 5 minutes, count it up on your watch and go brew the kettle! (This restores any lost data connection with the IDM and the Body Control computer) the IDM controls the dashboard.

Then, after 5 mins, deck the throttle quickly 5 times and watch the Engine management light on the dash... it should flash. When it stops flashing switch off then try again to start it up. (this procedure primes the fuel system)

The TD5 should start without glowplugs, albeit very lumpy for the first few seconds

and what he says, use the key in the drivers door to reset the car, details should be in your handbook

Thanx - familiar with that requirement but so far its not been possible as I mentioned when I refer to resetting the immo. Battenberg, is it likely that I will see a change to this after using your procedure mentioned above as at this time there is no horn at all when the key is turned in the drivers door........

the reset is done through the drivers door.
heres a simple explanation: Launch X431, Landrover Discovery td5 2001 eka ?

Not sure about the horn but I think there should also be a telltale by watching the alarm LED flashing frequency ... try to search it out I cant remember...

Thanx for that link Battenberg. Yes its pretty much what he tried early on but got no response aurally. Of course he hadn't tried your original suggestion at that time. My hope is of course, that your IDM and BCC reset procedure will facilitate the further step (EKA reset). Fingers crossed.......

Hi all, can I bust in on this thread and ask something.

I've just picked up a TD5 that hadn't been used for 2 yrs. Battery flat as the proverbial, started ok with a jump and starts fine now with it's new RedTop battery.

But there's no radio code in the vehicle and the radio (std Harmon Kardon setup) needs one.

If the previous owner can't find it (which is quite likely - nice guy but a little vague when it comes to vehicle-related stuff), how do I get hold of it, to use the radio??

A friend of mine in the trade had a Td5 parked up for 2 months over Christmas and when he went to start with a charged battery it started and ran BUT then the fun started :
(a) while left running the starter engaged all by itself
(b) when he opened the drivers door all the ignition lights came on
(c) key fob no longer worked - Disco wouldn't start ;

He was advised to remove passenger compartment fusebox and found it quite damp ; dried it out as best he could and some functions returned ;
but key fob still wouldn't work .
He was also advised that once affected by damp the fuse boxes rarely work properly again .
He is now waiting for a new fusebox from the main dealer .
Don't like to be possibly bearer of bad news but there are similarities .

Well blow me! I did as ya said Batts and during the period of 5 minutes instead of goin for a cuppa I used the time to check the fuses in the engine bay and you guessed it! One of them was blown. Replaced that and the alarm sprung to life and the car started as normal. Talk about Bizarre!
