Why do some egr blanking plates cost a fiver and some kits nearer 50 quid?

Do you get 45 quids more happiness? or shall I get the cheapie and leave the rest in place?

Ta

£ 5 will get you just the plate. £ 50 will get you the plate and the straight through pipe that replaces the valve unit itself. ( which is best in my opinion ! )

Bell Auto Services do it for £ 45 for LZ members .

If your the type that considers notifying your insurance about modifications, the plate is pretty much hidden. The full removal is a bit more obvious. Especially if you use a blue silicone hose.

I just used the plate and got a significant improvement. Not as much as cleaning the MAP sensor (TD5). That transformed the car for free!

Cheers

Hi Andy, I can't remember, is this sensor to which you refer the one between the air filter box and the turbo. If it is, what did you clean it with?

Cheers

Hi Dave ,
Its the sensor on the Air intake manifold on a Td5. It is just 2 x 8 mm bolts. I took mine off and cleaned it up and it was pretty mingin when removed. Engine now running better than ever. 5 min job.

Hi Dave

I used electrical contact cleaner on mine. It did a real good job of dissolving the oil. I also sprayed the MAF sensor for good measure.

Thanks for that Andy. I think us poor Tdi 300 boys only have a MAF, so I'll try the contact cleaner approach. If I can't get that here in France, I assume pure alcohol, from the chemist will work??

I asked about using wd-40 and was recommended Maplins Contact cleaner.

The aerosol I got has an extension pipe makes it handy to use.

I didn't get any actual recommendation to clean the MAF sensor. I just sprayed it cause I had the cleaner out and the mutiplug was handy to undo.

I doesn't seem to have done any harm though.

The EGR thing seems to be a popular DIY job - is it reasonable to think the independent LR guy that I've been advised to make friends with will be familiar with it? I plan on getting the car (97R 300Tdi Auto, 120K) to him for a timing belt at the end of the month and if so, he may as well try this at the same time.

Gave up trying to DIY my EGR blanking plate, as I have no wish to try and remove the exhaust manifold to drill out the egr bolts when they snap. Never mind eh! I consoled myself by cleaning the map sensor, definitely a 5 minute job, just got some elctrical contact cleaner from local auto bits shop £7, what a noticeable transformation, seems to pull away smoother and quicker too! Have to swallow the £37 hourly charge for 4x4 local outfit to do the biz with the egr plate. And I s'pose they can do a diagnostic to get rid of the tres amigos who seem to like the warm weather!!
