TD5 EGR Removal Question

You may find that return pipe was blocked off by the "Monkeys" at Landrover, It was a change they did on later production
vehicles, Just used a black rubber bung ( no pipe) but they left the hard pipe in behind the engine bay.... My 53 plate is the same.

Thats the pipe i was on about blanking off when the EGR cooler is removed....

Though I did notice there is a pipe fitment on the bottom of the rad belown the boost pipe, which looks like where that blanked pipe could connect. Am I right?

If you have the Rave manual look at the coolant component and flow pages, You will see two of the three options that have been used. On the D2, ( I have not looked into the Def Td5, so maybe that was the same) they also had the third option which had the oil cooler return to the rad blanked off.

So , later rads had the pipe blocked off.

Cheers

Hi,
Can I come in on this one? It seems to me e that it's totally unnecessary to do anymore than just disable the "egr" ! This can be done in a number of very simple ways: remove the vacuum supply to the two "egr" actuators and block them, remove the power supply to the two modulators or block off the vacuum supply at the "t" joint on the vacuum pipe leading to the brake servo.
I personally would not like to "mess" with any of the water plumbing! I'm now rather of the opinion that the removal of the "egr" on my 04 Disco lead to my problems. The water return from the oil cooler had been blocked off! As I've said before I think that a "troop of monkeys" played on this engine!
When it's so simple to disable the "egr", I'm amazed that so many companies make and supply kits for the job.
While on the subject of the "egr" , does anyone know when its actually "activated"? I presume that the two actuators are operating independently! Is it perhaps that the butterfly is shut off on overrun to help slow the engine down. When I have the time I'll rig up two lights and try to see.
EGR is normally activated at lower RPMs ie low power use and cruising speeds ..the two solenoid valves one works the butterfly in the intake this restricts in coming air so the engine is allowed to pull air from another place ..ie the egr valve ..that has the 2nd solenoid

as for an egr delete I have seen many people just blank off vacuum lines ..but 9 times out of 10 the EGR valve seat does not seat correctly and this case regardless if the vac lines are not connected ..there will be a small amount of egr gasses entering the engine all the way through the RPM range
most EGR valve seats get clogged up over time and loose there seal

as for shutting engine off and over run .the injectors are electronic and when the ignition is switched off the injectors should not be opening

I checked how my 90s EGR and Cooler where blanked off last night, it is how i described in the OP. EGR valve is gone and replaced, cooler is removed and the coolant pipe running from the EGR is also blanked off. Which is the same pipe that runs into the oil cooler on the other side of the engine.

A second coolant pipe just below the expansion bottle, on a T-Piece is also blanked off.

The blank was done by my old indie about 4 years and 25k miles ago, since then the 90 has been totally checked over by LR and Gigglepin neither of which mentioned it as a cause for concern.

The 90 has also run well within correct temps according to the nanocom, never lost any coolant and no leaks either.

The 110 is now blanked off in the same way. Im taking it to Gigglepin on Weds for a 'health check' just to make sure there is nothing wrong that ive missed, i will ask their opinion on it and post it here.

side plate oil coolers work with the flow via the block ..they are bleeding off some water to run the egr

I work on road trains mainly volvo that run a similer set up to the TD5 just in a larger form
and on these bigger side plates there are places where a hoses can go but they are all plugged off

As confirmed by Gigglepin 4x4 today. If removing the EGR Cooler that coolant pipe can be blanked off right at the oil cooler. No need for it once the cooler is removed.

to be honest
if I had a td5 when I was in the UK I would of removed the cooling part
here in Australia I find that extra 1 litre of coolant and the cooler sits right in front of the viscous can only help this poor small engine
