TD5 Discovery2. Hole in rocker cover!

Hi everyone,

So driving along normally, under acceleration there wasa kind of "fffert" noise then lost all power and won't restart.

Got recovered home and upon further investigation found a hole in the rocker cover! See the photo attached.

I assume the timing chain has given up and tried to escape? Any thoughts? I haven't had time to much more diagnosis than this.

53 plate, 160k miles

It looks like either the chain let go or the chain tensioner has gone.
You should pop off the cover and investigate, may be a bit late but dont try and spin it over until you find out.

Thanks, yeah its had a few cranks already unfortunately. :-/

Have you taken the rocker cover off? Wondering how many pieces the camshaft is in?

Have you had anything done in that area recently?

Haven't had time yet, first job for the weekend.

No work recently, possible rebuild of some sort 100k miles ago but no details on that.

Was there any information on what caused it?
The oil pump bolt has been known to come out, may throw som slack chain, but I'm only guessing here.

No nothing we haven’t thought of... broken chain flicking around or tensioner adrift

Chain could snap, but it's a substantial duplex chain, mine looked pretty good when I checked it after 120k miles.

so if i've got lucky and its not damaged the valve train or pistons, can i take the timing cover off without removing the head or sump? anyone done this before?

no,you need to take head off

It looks like you still have some bits of rocker cover missing in action, I would be wanting to do a full strip down to check everything before running it again. Head off, it's not a major drama to do.

The bolts we use cost £36 a set, gaskets are normally £35-40 depending on which one you are using.

Take a tip and buy good quality bolts and gasket, I bought OEM ones which came in a blue box, and ended up doing it twice.
Bought some German made bolts which were fine.
Used an elring gasket.
You can take the alloy cover off (the one which is broken) and take a look it may help you to size up the job.

yeah any recommendations on good quality parts are very welcome. not interested in saving a few quid and re-doing it!

The gaskets we use are Reinz or Elring. The bolts come from BG Automotive. Definitely not a blue bag job!
