Hi

My TD5 Disco, '98 260k has developed a gurgling noise from the cooling system.

Repeated bleeding does not cure the noise, seems worse when starting from cold, all sounds well untill revs reach 2000. there is then a gurgling noise.

I'm thinking head gasket, or is this a symptom of a cracked head.

Not getting oil in coolant,
not getting diesel in oil, or coolant.

Any thoughts guys?

Are you sure it's not something mechanic? ... a cracked head/gasket failure will cause overpressure/overheating/stiff top hose....remove the viscous fan and try then

Viscous fan has been removed for a couple of months, no overheating (at least as indicated by gauge) not noticing overpressure in top hose. Every time its bled, it is fine for about 20 mins, then back to square one.
Dont want to go down the head / gasket route if there's anything I might have missed.

when did you replace the thermostat? ...it has a bypass flow valve which opens only above 1500rpm, as a theory, it could be somehow restricted and make that noise:confused:... worth a try IF YOU ARE CERTAIN THAT THE NOISE COMES FROM THE COOLING SYSTEM/COOLANT FLOW ..cos it seems quite strange to me

I like your thinking. Will try that on Friday if i get the chance. Was going to pull out the fuel pump and clean the filter inside it, (I know its got nothing to do with the current issue, but after 260k I reckon it might want a clean!)

Is there a major downside if I just remove the thermostat completely?

Was going to refit the viscous fan, only removed it to try to gain a tiny bit more mpg, doesn't seem to have had much effect.

you can't remove the thermostat on td5 without putting something instead of it(an Y piece or something), or strip out it's internals, not recommended, cos it will run under the working temperature all the time, the mpg, and heating will be negatively affected

my td5 has similar symptoms took it into jsf landrover who put a die in the coolant that turns green if it detects exhaust gas cost £24 and unfortunatly for me my head gasket has gone but saves a lot of speculation good luck

Any decent indy garage should be able to do the above which is known in the trade as a "sniff test". Takes a few minutes and is very accurate. SHould not cost an arm and a leg either.
