Hi.
My discos' fan has started to only work on hurricane speed and as a result I'm spending a fortune on toupee glue.
Is this fixable or is it a new unit and if so-how much?

Unfortunately it seems the Power transistor is gone(behind glovebox, looks like this http://www.lrseries.com/shop/produc...OWER-TRANSISTOR.html?search=transistor&page=1 , u can check it with a multimeter set on ohm..., unplug it and measure between legs two ways...one way must be much greater resistance than in the other....if resistances are close it's faulty, quite expensive.....if you listen to me u can escape much cheaper....find one or some similar transistor(without the cooling element) Toshiba 2SD1460,...replace just the transistor on the aluminium cooler.

Hi and thanks for all of your helpful input and replies.I ahve managed to get a new transistor to fix the resistor pack issue. Is there any soldering involved at all?
I have just bought one from RS components for £12 inc delivery and the opening an account part was easy too

Hi all.
New resistor fitted but not soldered as I didn't have the gear to do it so I just tried to crimp it all together and it is exactly the same as before with the fan running on the highest speed only. When I was testing it all before putting the glovebox etc back together I noticed that there are 2 relays on the left side as you look from the footwell.Could they have anything to do with the problem ?There was an audible click when the fan was switched to its lowest setting but nothing from the fan and another click when the fan was set to its' highest (only) speed.I will buy a soldering iron on 4th and try it again and let you all know how it went.

I'm confused mate... what are u talking about... first u said "...get a new transistor to fix the resistor pack" .. now "new resistor fitted".... maybe u are not doing the right thing then. I say again...if it's digitally controlled A/C there is no resistor pack, it's a power transistor.... if it's not digital there's no transistor just resistor pack...u can't fix a resistor pack with a transistor.... nor a digitally controlled A/C blower with a resistor pack

Hi sierrafery.
I bought an MJ11016 to replace the power transistor as I had first said (I think).Terminology can be a terribly confusing thing at times eh ?I never mentioned that I dropped the new transistor onto my floor tiles prior to fitting it! could this have broken it ?

Ok then, maybe the shock ruined it....and i hope u didnt mix the wires cos it could happen if u are not carefull enough... but i forgot to mention that my MJ11016 didnt last for long aswell, some friends used other substitutes and they didnt work as they should(i cant explain why though)... then i went for original Toshiba 2SD1460 which has been working since without probs. I ordered it from here TOSHIBA 2SD1460/D1460 | eBay try to find one of these in UK, be carefull to connect it like the original was, use a soldering gun too and i'm sure it will work.

 ...that's not good, in this situation the ECU might give a false signal to the power relay, the power relay is stuck closed, or it's a wiring/short cut issue. Here is how it works :
Blower control
The ATC ECU operates a blower relay, power transistor and power relay to run the blower at one of 31 stepped speeds. All speed steps are available in the automatic modes of blower control. In the manual mode, speed steps 3, 10, 16, 22 and 31 are used to provide slow, three intermediate and fast blower speeds. The ATC ECU energises the blower relay and modulates the power transistor to operate the blower for speed steps 1 to 30. For speed step 31, the ATC ECU energises the power relay, which switches the earth side of the blower motor direct to earth, bypassing the power transistor. (that's more uncommon than the tranzistor but it's possible...never happened to me though)

So take out that relay and see what happens... u might have now all the speeds except the highest ... here's the relay

Will try when I get home tonight and let you know. There are 2 relay there so going by the picture you kindly supplied I take it it is the one closest to the glovebox you are talking about ?

it's the one pointed as C901 with the white plug ... the other one C153 close to it is the blower relay and if u remove this the blower wont work at all

Hi Sierraferry.
No joy.I'm going to buy a complete blower assembly as it is now officially getting on my tits

Hi, IMO it will be wasted money...the new blower assy will get the same inputs as the old one, it's a simple motor in there, u better find a knowleadgeable electrician to make measurements after the diagram... it's not the blower at fault but it's management... if the transistor and the relay are ok it remains the ECU or a wiring issue/short circuit somewhere
...read again the blower control description before u spend money

Show this part of the scheme to an electrician and he will tell u the same ...that second relay might be blocked closed though C153 on the pic above

Hi, let's hope it will work ... though if it has a resistor pack it means it is not compatible with electronic A/C ... it is for the non A/C manual heating/ventilation system.
