Hi all

I have a 2001 TD5 Discovery, which has covered 67k miles, i have owned for 3 months.

Recently i have noticed a "squeal" when i reverse, its is mainly when its cold [IE on a morning] after a few miles it goes off and is OK for the day.

In the past few days i have noticed it also form first to second gear.

Although its quite noisy it disappears quite quickly.

I am guessing thats its a thrust bearing, the local LR specialist who i bought it from tells me "its normal, 80% of em do it" and nothing to worry about, and oh by the way it would not be covered under warrenty anyway. BUT. should i wish to have the bearing replaced, it would make sense to change the clutch assembly too [which i guess makes sense] at a cost of £500 to £700. This estimate was based on using LR parts and just in case there were some seized bolts which may take more time and push it towards teh £700.

i have owned 5 discos now, and never expirenced anything like it.

Does any other owner know of this problem ? if so what recitified it ? and is it likely to cause a major prblem if i left it alone ?

Cheers

Geoff:confused:

Mine has done this for the past 4 years, same as yours, only first thing in the morning and generally only in reverse - occassionally in 1st. I wonder if its the spigot bearing, its never got any worse on mine so I have not bothered to investigate further.

Hi

i spoke to another 4x4 specialist yesterday who qouted £500 for a new clutch assembly. But interestingly diagnosed the problem as the "spigot bearing" whatever that is ???? ... he would do that at the same time.

I guess the quote for clutch assemblies and stuff is owing to the fact as the gearbox is out etc it would be stupid not to replace.

The advice i am also getting is stick to Land Rover or Valeo clutch stuff as most other aftermarket [cheaper] clutch parts can be problematic.

Cheers

Geoff

The spigot bearing is fitted into the centre of the crankshaft so that the centre shaft of the gearbox can fit into this bearing.

I replaced the clutch on my 110 Td5 (now thankfully replaced by a 110 300Tdi) only to have the same noise return a week later from the new thrust bearing. Advice, unless the clutch slips, leave it alone.

Your best bet and the cheapest wil be to buy a 4 piece clutch kit yourself then take it to your local garage to do the work save yourself £100 +.
A clutch isnt a too big a job on the td5 (the defender at least..) the engine dose not need to come out alll the way and the gearbox is quite easy to take out if you wana do it yourself. I'd also agree valeo or genuine LR parts are best Britpart is abit crap
hope iv shined some light on your prob
cheers ben
