Hi All,

Well firstly i have a confession, this is my first time in the discovery forum as im usually found in the Range Rover Forum trying to fix problems with my old P38. But having just brought myself a TD5 Project i have a feeling it wont be my last lol.

The problem im having is i brought the car with a suspected problem with the loom in the rocker cover, ive changed that and still no joy. ive disconnected the inlet pipes and can feel there is back pressure, so im thinking either head gasket or valve???

has anyone had this problem, think im going to take the head off at the weekend but wanted a heads up if it could be something else

thanks guys

Hi David,

When i picked the car up it was in need of alot of work, mostly the interior but the last owner told me that it had a miss fire.. he had brought a new section of the loom that is located inside the rocker cover as he had been told this suffered from oil penitration causing problems and just hadnt had time to fit it.I stripped the rocker cover off yesterday and changed it over and had the fault codes wiped and still no joy.. so today after another poke around i realised there was back pressure goin back down the air inlet.

The oil in the loom can work its way down into the ecu plug and also the ecu itself, Make sure the plug is completely clean and dry and if nessesary open up the ecu and clean it inside. If the oil has got this far it will need regular cleaning untill it stops.

hi there, will have a look first thing in the morning when its light.. can this cause the back pressure down the air intake though?

thanks for the help

Don't see how an electrical item can cause back pressure.

Where are you checking this pressure? I'm not sure what it is you are doing to come to this conclusion - perhaps you could explain a little more for the benefit of this thicky?

Cheers
Dave

I think if im honest that the fault has nothing to do with the oil in the loom, i no this can cause a missfire but as you say Dave i dont see how it can cause the back pressure .. i think the only way im going to find out is by stripping the head off and looking at the gasket and valves... not a job im looking forward to but hey

That air filter pipe is only connected to the turbo & a breather from the rocker cover, I would try running the engine & pull the dipstick out or remove the oil filler cap & see if you have any pressure at either of these points.

Is there a lot of oil in the air filter pipe ?

hi, i was getting back pressure booming in the airbox, it turned out to be a broken hydraulic tappet so compression was going back in the wrong direction, check with your fingers all the rockers are tight, if you can a compression test will let you know if its a valve. my problem was on cylinder one, nearest the rad. if you need any head work done, or advice on td5 heads, call Ian, (autotech~cylinder heads) 01726 817475.
