Hi all, not really much of a mechanic, but they are so easy to work on even a duffer like me can do lots of things on the drive. But this noise seems a bit out of my league. Going uphill the box seems to whirr and smells a bit. I was told to put in drive, foot on brakes and engine should die at 2000rpm. Mine doesn't, this whirr starts at 2000 and then she goes on up 3000+. Is this Torque converter on the way out. We have changed the oil, which looked fine, but no difference. Changes up and down fine though. Any help would be appreciated, including thoughts on whether a 30 mile drive to the nearest autobox guys in Bristol would be a dumb thing to do.

Thanks David, I did not realize it had to be warmed up, doing it then means that it does stall out at 2500rpm albeit with the whirring noise. So probably not clutch or TC reading the comments in that link?

This also may be a dumb question, but should the engine actually stall in a stall test or does it mean that is where the revs stop going up (I assumed the latter but ....)

No, it's the TC that stalls not the engine. If the engine stalls then you have other problems
Maybe worth getting a video of the issue (with sound) and getting it on Youtube with a link on here.
