Disco 2 Td5 Auto Transmission Cooler

Has anyone had a transmission cooler added to there td5 autobox?

I'm thinking of another trip to the Sahara and heard I can get one installed. Not sure why though and wanted advice if anyone has any?

Not sure tbf, would another be better than a larger one for resiliency?

I would have thought the standard factory unit that is fitted to auto boxes will do for most parts of the world, and if it didn't you'll get a dashboard indication of overheating.

Dune driving will take its toll as it's very heavy vehicle with roof rack, rock sliders, bull bar etc

Bear in mind that they tested the vehicle in the Mohave Desert when developing it so anything that the Sahara will throw at it will be far less intense - but the main issue will be your daily maintenance regime. That will decide whether it suffers failures on the trip.

If you can find a suitably sized one, then I don't see why not....did that upgrade to mine a few years ago and haven't looked back.
Yes, they may have tested the stock cooler in the Mohave and all, but over here in Africa with average ambient temperatures of 34 degrees celcius on a typical day, in real World driving conditions with traffic and air conditioning running, that cooler tends to suffer from heat soak sitting in between the condenser and radiator. You'd be surprised to know that the transmission overheat warning comes on more times than you would like. Got meself a large transmission cooler from a Toyota land cruiser, extended hoses and mounted it out front of the AC condenser, right in the air stream. Will attach a photo of the setup later...

When I increased the power of my 300Tdi, I spoke to ZF technical about this - and they said, essentially - you won't over cool the box... so I got these guys to make me a larger cooler

I don't know about the D2 - but the D1 warning light is a waste of time - it doesn't come on till the fluid is at 135 centigrade - by which point your ATF is toast....

Yeah I've already done it once, just concerned for the life of the autobox

I've got some pictures..... somewhere...... I'll see if I can find them...

General picture of the new larger cooler installed...
The temp sender in the cooler is connected to a gauge (!), and I never see anything above 60 centigrade - even under heavy towing...

. Ah, well, ... in my case, no, it was a b*tch - because some fool decided that this bl**dy thing had to go in front of it:-


And, due the thickness of it, this meant that the standard LR cooler pipes were too long. If the intercooler hadn't been there, then it would have fallen in really.... serves me right ..... maybe .....

It was all worth it in the end though......

Anyone bought one for a D2? Seem to only be able to find standard or people taking about intercoolers
