TD5 auto, is this a fault?

I have what I think is an odd problem with my 2004 auto TD5 but it may actually be normal. Sometimes when I have the foot hard on the floor the revs will rise normally to just over 4000 but instead of automatically changing up the engine will start to stutter and the rev needle will bounce by a couple of hundred revs. This continues until I lift off and then it will change up a gear. It feels like a rev limiter does on a manual car but seems very odd for an automatic. It can be a bit scary when overtaking.

That is not normal and needs investigation.

check your turbo wastegate isn't sticking.

Hi,
I have the same or similar, when I floor it you expect it to drop a gear then go, but instead it starts juddering as if it is starved of fuel or hitting a limiter. I like the wastegate idea so will have a look and let you know.

Hi,
Checked wastegate and it's fine, took it to a local 4x4 garage ( garsys auto's easington colliery ) and garsy drove it up the street with foot to the floor and it was kangarooing. Straight away he said air flow meter, he diconnected the meter set off again and it was fine. Back at his garage he cleaned the meter but also the rubber gasket on the intake side was deformed so possibility it was sucking air in. Put it back together, drove home it's like a new motor, dare overtake things now without the worry.
