I had the gearbox oil on my TD5 auto changed not too long ago- the car's performance changed from sluggish to lively, a marked improvement.
Now after about 1500 miles I have twice had the oil temperature light come on just as I got home, after driving on relatively short journeys.
I'll take it for a diagnostic check this week, there have been no obvious leaks underneath - does anyone have any thoughts on what the problem might be?

Hi Gerry it's Dave, how are things?

The issue with your car is almost certainly down to a faulty oil temp sensor, attached to the bottom of the oil cooler in the engine bay.

Get a new one in stock and tell your local garage (I'm assuming they rather than you, will do the work?) that there is an access plastic panel in the front drivers side (rhs) wheelarch which gives very good access directly to this component. Otherwise they'll take half the car apart to do the job :D:D:D:D

Cheers
Dave

Ps Still got it then?

Hi Dave,
All is good here in La Vienne, ta very much, hope you're well.
Yes, I've still got it, it saved us again this last winter, starting and stopping most impressively when all the little peugeots and renaults were finding their rightful place in the ditches....
And you guessed right, the local garagiste will do the job, he's got a brand new diagnostic machine, is a 4x4 fan, his son has a Defender, so it's in good hands. and I don't get ripped off.
We now share glass of wine the nights he's not towing breakdowns off the motorway - that's the relationship to have with a garage, I reckon.
I'll check out the sensor price and pick one up when I go back to England next week.
One thought - I wonder would that access plastic panel in the front drivers side (rhs) wheelarch be in the same place on my car, which is LHD? I only need to look, I know..........
If you need anything brought back, let me know.
Thanks again for the guidance.

Hi Gerry, yes I'm pretty sure it will be in the same place as the oil cooler does not change sides. So it should still be the rhs.

I didn't realise yours was a left hooker?

I'm just picking up a slight trace of admiration for the Disco - it's a creeping thing you know...................................:D:D:D

My english spelling is getting worse and worse :eek::eek:

One of the mags had a warning this month about new RR autoboxes burning out when the trans oil cooler "sludges up" in the rad. Maybe worth checking for free-flowing cooling?
