Hi all, I've picked up a 2001 TD5 auto as a project it has a few issues I'm working through one being the auto oil temp. light stays on. I've removed the oil cooler & put a meter across the wires on the temp. switch which shows it's open circuit so I heated it up in boiling water but get no resistance readings.( seems like it's NFG) Has anybody tried/got readings for this switch please ? Much appreciation in advance for any help.

Sorry about the above, it should have read the switch was closed circuit even after it was heated.
Your first post has the facility to edit when u change you mind.

I would imagine that sensor is a simple bimetal switch hence a resistance isn’t important and thats why the switch is cheap to purchase, Is not unknown for the switch to fail and simply replacing it cures the problem, there’s a few threads on the subject alread.

Does sound like a switch issue, that’s seeing a constant high reading so telling the gearbox ecu it’s hot and therefore bringing light on.

Thanks Discool & rich28uk for the replies, I checked Rimmer Bros for the price of the switch LR £121.79 ouch ! pattern £48.60 still not cheap for what it is but it's cheaper & easier than a g/box overhaul. The ATF I drained out is brown so I've got a sump filter & oil to do along with of the many common faults, couple of broken ex. studs, fr. windows not working, seized rear wiper motor, fr. sunroof n/w & wet headliner around the windscreen/ door pillar, tailgate door hinges half seized + lots of other niggles ! Jobs done so far replaced p/s pump & hose, aux. belt, eng. oil/filter inc. rotor filter, valve cover gskt. cam shaft fr. end seal, o-rings on inj. harness connector, where will it end o_O certainly won't get board. Thanks again.

It won’t end , but once sorted there a good vehicle that only needs small regular maintenance to keep going, problems start when people buy a dirt cheap one that’s never been looked after expect it to just work, at least your going through yours to get it sorted.

You're not wrong, I've done lots of preventative maintenance on the 04 Freelander I've had for just over 3 years now & apart from a fuel pump failure it hasn't missed a beat, it's done 164,000 miles of which I've done 30,000, doesn't leak & has never used a drop of oil. This Discovery has done 166,000 miles ( service history up to 130,000), one owner from new who by his own admission very rarely lifted the bonnet as "he knew nothing about cars" & let it go because he didn't want to spend any more money on it. When I went to get it, it started first time & apart from putting some p/s fluid in it (empty due to leaky pump & not used since the mot run out Sept.19) it drove great so I'm tackling all the essential jobs then I'll take it for an mot & go from there. I know it will want some welding on the o/s rear chassis leg (that's about the only thing I can't do myself) as it's a bit crusty & had an advise last time, so if I can get away with spending about a grand on it I'll be happy.

You haven't mentioned rust in the rear chassis. that could be cos there ain't any.....or.........;)
Damm must have slipped my mind, yeah it had an advise on it's last mot (Sept18). As I can't weld I'll get it in for an mot & go from there. As far as I can see it doesn't look to bad just the surface that faces the tarmac around the drain hole is crusty. It's never been off roaded or towed anything so as I said to rich28uk, if I can get it on the road for about a grand I'll be well happy.

Thanks for that link Discool. I'm going to put the dodgy one back for now as I'm happy it's only the switch that's making the temp light come on. I've got the auto g/box filter & fluid already (to change this week). Once I get an mot done (I know it will fail on at least the discs/ pads & probably the o/s rear chassis leg) I'll have a better idea of how much it's going to cost me.
