It's important to understand why you are getting the feeling of lack of power/drive.

The std torque converter converter has a stall speed of 2600 to 2800 rpm which means that below lock-up speed or if you floor the accelerator it's like driving a slipping clutch manual box car - Horrible. The modified one has a stall speed of 2200rpm so there's much more of a direct drive feel. Your car will feel loads better with just that.

If I were you I would do the TC mod first, then see if you need still more umph, I had mine remapped by Mike of Dynachip and he did a superb job for £225.

ok that makes sense
il get the new converter fitted and see if that makes it better
i know what you mean about the clutch slip feel its nasty
just be nice for it to be more responsive and direct
iv done a few bits to the car already and it performs much better now just want it right.

ASSUMING YOURS IS A PRE 2002 CAR - you can do the following to make it run better:

1. As always the first thing to do is put in a new air filter - these cars breath deeply and need a good flow;

2. De-EGR - this entails removing the EGR valve which allows the engine to breath clean air only - improve response at tick-over and low revs generally;

3. De-Cat - replace the catted exhaust downpipe for one without a cat (cost about £60) - improves breathing and general responsiveness + mpg!;

4. Clean the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor on the inlet manifold - these get really cacked-up and therefore give duff signals to the ECU. Brake and clutch cleaner is your friend here - smother running benefits;

5. Check the red plug on the ECU for oil, if there is any it means you have old injector loom seals that need replacing - seals cost a couple of squids and improves running overall.

6. Check for a faulty MAF - disconnect it and check performance. If it is identical, your MAF is cooked. New ones available from EBAY at £30 or LR ones £90. The Ebay ones work fine, I used a few on different vehicles.

If you do that lot your car will run better.

Cheers
Dave

Not to increase performance, but just as preventative maintenance, you could:

1. Renew brake fluid - use a Hawkeye/Nanocom to pump out the old fluid it works like a charm;

2. Renew coolant and thermostat;

3. Renew oils in the main, transfer box, & both diffs;

4. Check the rear chassis for rust and treat as necessary;

5. Check/replace all disc & pads.

It's so nice to hear someone doing a thorough job of sorting out a new car, the very best of luck to you.
