TD5 (2004) starter will not operate...

Hi all, my Disco 2, TD5 will not start. I have noticed that when the ignition key is turned to "start" there is a slight (1 second) delay before the starter motor starts to turn. It has been this way for some time and I assumed this was normal. It started fine after the "delay" until today. The battery is fully charged and the headlights are nice and bright but when I turn the key to "start" absolutely nothing happens. I can hear the fuel pump whirring and all the dash lights come on and off as normal but the starter does not turn. Not even a click from the solenoid.
Any ideas?

Hmmmm... bit weird. I have just connected (with jumper leads) the tractor battery to the Disco and it started! I have re-checked the Disco battery and the voltage seems ok - maybe a bit low. I guess a new battery is the next step but I thought the engine would at least turn over a bit with a weak battery? Is the system designed to only work at a minimum voltage? ie below a certain voltage the starter relay just does not work?

Same thing happened to my 2004 TD5. Battery fine one minute. Complete collapse the next, from being able to start the car to not even turning it over. One new battery later and everything's tickety boo. Except for the wallet that is.

Thanks for the tip ref the solenoid! I decided to have a look at the connections and simply pulling the small black connector off and then back on again solved the problem! I have cleaned up the connection and all is well now. I guess the "delay" in the starter operating was due to the poor electrical connection? Anyway all fixed for nothing (for a change!).

Sometimes just cleaning up the contacts will get you out of trouble, but alas can only be temporary.
You might as well get a repair kit as Mr Noisy says.
If you have any doubts about how to go about the repair, look on UTUBE.
It''s what I did and it couldn't be any simpler.
Gives you piece of mind, especially if your jam jar is an auto
