19J starter solenoid

Hi all,
Went to fire up the old girl and all of a sudden all of the dashboard lights went out.
Found out that the positive ring terminal to the starter had corroded off.
When I went to undo the nut which attached the positive ring to the starter solenoid, the solenoid cap sheared off! (Shown in picture)
Is it still possible to start it by somehow bridging the starter solenoid (or what’s left of it)?
Just interested to see what you’d do to get it moving under its own steam

Solenoid just a switch , put live lead direct to the one coming out of starter or have a couple of heavy duty/ jump flying leads connected to the two lead ends and into cab and join there to engage starter
That one. The ring terminal going into the starter itself will spin the engine over if you put a jump Lead onto from the battery. I would favour bump starting if it was not a 19j. My 200tdi takes so little to start that I can get it loving smiley, jump into the cab, put it in gear and drop the clutch, and there is still enough moment despit having slowed to start it up. My memories of a 19j is that require a little more to get going than that. Might not be 2.25 diesel territory but not as good as the tdi!

Thank you both! I thought it was a shame that a solenoid would write off a starter. Yeah the 19J does take some starting which makes bumping it a tiresome job if on the flat. I assumed the flying lead off it was earth due to the black cover but will definitely be following your advice.

The flying lead off the back is the positive, and would have been connected to the solenoid which is essentially a giant switch between that cable and the cable to the battery. The motor earths through the casing onto the block. You could put an earth jump lead to the motor bolt/casing but it would not need it if it was starting well before the solenoid issues.
