Td4 rocker cover breather

This is the result of a blocked rocker cover breather, the car was recovered in as a non starter. We replaced the high pressure pump and got it running, pulled the dipstick out to check for excess crankcase pressure and the oil shot out of the dipstick tube and hit the bonnet.

I reckon, if the bonnet wasn't on, the oil would have hit the workshop ceiling, it was like a fountain!

This is the worst one I've seen so I thought I'd post the pic on here.

Why didn't they paint the workshop floor black all over the place? Not just the surrounding of the carlift ???

Am I glad I changed it some months ago. Thanks for the picture clutch, one picture says more than a thousand words, so if one was still hesitating of changing that filter or have it changed I think (hope) they made up their mind with this input.

That's not paint, it's the contents of the sump, two technicians got soaked in oil too, I wish I'd video'd it, I've never seen anything like that in all my years as a technician.
 
Hello ,

I have had this problem (see loss of power at 70 sagas). I was wondering on a normal properly breathing engine, should any oil come out of the dip stick hole? Should TD4 owners try this test at home to give some indication of an underlying problem before it gets too far. What do you think.

No oil should come from the dipstick tube, if any comes out, even a little, then the breather is blocked.

The breather is now a servicable item and is replaced every 24,000 miles, although it only takes a second to check it, best to check when the engine is warm. Just pull the dipstick out with the engine idling.
 
Thanks for that. I just wish it had been a servicable item before and then I would have been a lot more happy with my car and have a lot less grief and more money in my pocket.

Hehe, I had this happen on my TD4. Only thing was it managed to push the dipstick out while I was driving.

Didnt realise until I was nearly at work and oil starting landing on the windscreen after blowing out the front grill. It covered the car everywhere. All over the bodywork, rear window underside of the car. It made a hell of a mess. The car parking space was left with a nice oil slick as well...

Not knowing about crank case pressure, I was really worried. They changed the breather filter and no more oil emergencies...

Out of interest what is the crank pressure filter made of? Normal aspirated engines just have a wire strainer in rocker cover.

K series has a wire thing in the rocker cover, looks like a brillo pad, the Td4 one is circular, about an inch long and is made of a plastic inner surrounded by like a sponge type thing, I expect you could clean it by soaking it in solvent or washing with brake cleaner.
