TD4 Prop Shaft mount

What you do is to tell the garage to remove the prop shafts & VCU - as I say, its a very very simple, quick and LOW COST job.

Then you'll almost certainly be able to drive the car home.

Tell them though to put all the bits they take off (inc bolts) in the back of the car rather than you losing them.

Awesome. Cheers for that!

When you get the car home, I'd drain the oil in the IRD (the front diff that the props bolt to). Before draining though, loosen the fill plug.

If the oil comes out greyish - then your IRD is trash as a means of keeping the car 4WD - you'll need a recon IRD &, VCU and new support bearings. You will probably be OK to refill and drive 2WD - BUT - you'll need to tell your insurance co and I'd replace the rear pinion with a blanking plate or else the IRD stands a chance of jamming and shattering.

If the oil comes out still black - then you can look into diagnosing other possible problems. It is not inconcievable that the sound you say is coming from the front, may actually originate in the back. This being the case the front mount for the rear diff has probably gone. That's a simple replacement - but it is usually caused by mismatch tyres and/or a VCU thats to stiff so really you want to be putting the props back on and testing the VCU (using the 1 wheel up test).

I think the situation is - (1) get the garage to take the props off, (2) get the car home and (3) diagnose what the real problem is.

Thanks for that. Much appreciated!
