Hi all have had starting problems with my TD4 diagnosed as mainly fuel pump issues. Both pumps have been replaced and things are a hellava lot better!!! However, I seem to have a strange electrical gremlin.....when stone cold and the glow plug light comes on....I get a loud buzzing from the relay box above fuel pump. I have lifted the lid and listened carefully....it appears to be the main relay R1 buzzing. If you sit in the cab and whatch the glow plug light in kinda flashes on and off ... like the relay is cutting power.
Starting from stone cold is still slightly laboured....takes to or 3 cracks. Once started truck is fine all day.

I suspect the glow plugs are failing to heat...and the cranking is compensating for this by heating the chambers.

I am hoping other TD4 owners have had similar issues.... is there a sneaky earth I should be looking for....that may need cleaning, do relays break down with time......these are 10yrs old.....your thoughts and advice would be much appreciated

Have yu tried removing the relay and cleaning the contacts?
Have yu tried removing it and putting power across the activation contacts?
Have yu tried replacing the relay?

look yer muppet . . . . .youv'e answerd yer own thread int yer ,um try changing the said suspect relay

Yes, I am replacing relays ... they are are on order....however I was trying to establish if there was ...say a common issue with earthing or perhaps common issues with the fuse box. I don't appreciate being called a muppet.....what concerns me...is.. if a relay buzzes it means usually there is not enough power/strength to hold contacts shut.....meaning either low voltage or possibly a bad earth. For example is there a main earthing harness under the fuse box???? I am simply looking for potential common issues previously dealt with..............

Hi I have now replaced the main relay that was buzzing......the buzzing seems to have stopped but from time to time I get the ignition clicking on and off during restart...........this is on the 1st click ignition on.

I have a gut feeling it could be to do with the glow plugs............and their activation. Can anybody indicate where the glow plug relay is.......

One last question in the drivers side passanger compartment ... there is a fuse box. There are two lines of fuses.........and at the end there are 2 relays one above the other the top one has a blue socket........what do these relays control???

I am making the assumpion that the TD4 is around 10 yers old as you stated the relay probably is?
If so you can find the answers to all of your questions in the RAVE.
Don't have a link to hand but it's free to download and you can find it on google. :welcome2:
It has electrical diagrams, service info, handbooks, accessory installation sheets descriptions of how each part works, workshop manual - the list goes on.
Remember the behind you kick today may be the one you will be kissing tomorrow - the clues are there in the no. of posts :)
Thick skin is almost mandatory and the Trattor boys ain't even visited your thread yet :screaming_bug_eye_f

Right replaced main relays it appears to have cured buzzing.....other relays in the internal passenger cabin ..... one is fuel pump (bottom) mine runs hot clicks intermitantly on startup.....I think the new pumps are drawing more current. So I will be replacing this.
The relay above is in a blue socket....I don't know what this is yet.....

Hi my loud buzzing has returned ........ I think it is linked to all the damp weather we have had ere up't north laddy..........I suspect a dry or coroded joint or two or three...
is it possible to remove the terminals from the fuse box......I would like to solder all the crimped terminals............is it possible........

Hi just thought i would give an update........managed to loosen and undo fuse box
and tip it slightly to gain access underneath........after clearing all the damp leaves and crap I was able to see about 10 or 11 sockets that plug into the back of the fuse box.
Some of these don't look too clever........and appear to be an ideal breeding ground for
corrosion and various naughties....... I wanted to systematically unplug the loom....
but the plugs appear to be held on with internal paw grips.......... at this point i had to admit defeat........I liberally sprayed the underside with WD40......this appeared to chear things up no end. my advice to all Freebe owners as preventive medicine give these contacts a spray as I did at each service schedule.........I am ultimately faced with tracing down my bad connection.....within this .... believe me you don't won't to go there out of neccessity!!! You have been warned....
