Hi I have td4 2003 which runs great but has developed a loud clattering noise when I turn steering wheel at idle. It went away for a week and returned again today. Power steering fluid ok and no leaks. Noise is sometimes faint till I move steering wheel. It does sound like it's coming from down by drivers wheel. Anybody any advice.

Hi, just buy chance found if I turn air con off and turn steering wheel, no noise. Air con back on noise returns

there is obviously some problem with the belts been driven as said by nodge68 it is probably your bottom crank pulley these have a habit of braking up as they are in 2 parts the best thing to do is open the bonnet and shine a torch down at the bottom pulley if the pulley is going you will see what I call fairy dust but what it is metal dust off the pulley the bolt on this is very tight so you have been warned

Hi,, just had a look with torch. Few specks of dust visible. Take it is early stage of it breaking down and air con and power steering pump are adding more strain on it. Anybody know of a good supplier of pulley. Thanks for the help guys

Hi managed to get a look a pulley and belt today with the plastic cover and wheel removed. Typical, noise has stopped again. Belt looked a bit bouncy when running. Removed belts which needed replacing anyway. Checked pulleys and all ran free. Crankshaft pully looks newish and tight with no movement. If it is shot can you tell just with the belt off or do you have to take pulley off to tell. Pulley clean with no metal dust on it.

The tensioner looked a little wobbly running but with the belt off there wasn't really any play in it. All the other pulleys looked smooth including the crankshaft when running with belt on.

Ok. It is possible for the piece of plastic that is held in place by the skid pan to rub against the, erm, bottom turny thing, brains gone dead!!
If you turn the wheel the noise comes and goes. Usually only happens if you have removed the pan. But check the plastic bit, bottom of inner wheel arch.

Hi, it was making the noise with the plastic cover removed. Checked the guide wheels and they have a bit of side play so going to replace them and the tensioner and try it with new belts. If the crankshaft pulley is gone would you feel play in it with the belts removed or do you have to take it of first?

The crank damper can look ok but still be knackered. It's sometimes difficult to see a fault one until it's just about to fall apart. It's a 2 part construction with rubber between the inner and outer section. When they fail it's the rubber that unsticks, allowing the 2 parts to slip slightly under load.

Thanks for that. Put new belt on and left air con one off. Not got new tensioner yet. New belt still fluttering and tensioner wheel also. No noise tho. Think I will just have to buy new pulley. Was hoping it wasn't going to be that. If it takes a six foot scaffolding pole to remove bolt, how do you guys tighten it back Up?

Buzz gun gets the bolt out and back in;)
Before committing to a new pulley. Put a dot of tippex on the outer and inner metal sections in line with each other. Then drive the car and check the dots after you turn the engine off. If the dots have moved, there's your answer;)

Used the same idea on SWMBO's old peugeot last year. .. showed it was well and truly kaput

Hi, i had already ordered new pulley by the time I seen post about marking the pulley. New pulley on and tensioner wheel. Drove 3 miles today and No noise so far. Pulley looked ok when off. Only changed tensioner wheel for now as it looked like you would have to move air con compressor and alternator unless anyone knows better. Thanks for all the help.
