My son brought his 2004 FL1 down at the w/e saying he hears a faint noise on slow left turns, but not turning right. I cannot hear anything, but my ears are 35 years older than his !!

We jacked it up & checked:

1. Wheel bearing - no signs of play or bearing rumble.
2. Drive shaft CV joints - very slight play in OS outer CV, but seem generally quite good
3. Lower arms - inner bushes both in really good condition, but on outer has split rubber. No movement of ball joint (yet) using pry bar.
4. Track rod ends both good with no play.
5. Calipers moving easily. Took them off & re-greased the slide pins, although there was plenty in there already.
6. Pads are only 3 months old. Minimal wear & all even.
7. Discs also 3 months old & look as new. No wobble or warp signs.

We did find one pad shim slightly bent, but it wasn't touching the discs, even when braking. Straightened that just in case. Also cleaned the calipers & carriers. Mostly old brake dust !!

Could this be early signs of CV or bearing failure.

Check tyres for even wear and pressure especially left to right. Bit of a phaff, but swap wheels left and right to see if the sound then happens turning right.

Must admit, I heard a sound most horribleous from my engine a few years back that nobody else could hear. I was convinced it was going to throw the cambelt. So even though the mechanic thought I was nuts, had the belt/tensioner replaced. Sound was even worse afterwards :)

Mine was the spring holder for the brake shoes on the back drum
Was doing a scraping noise on corners then just completely failed
Worth a try as they do fail regularly

Erm see my thread re wheel bearings

Will check that. We didn't look at the back because the noise sounds like it's at the front, but then rear wheels aren't that far away on an FL1 ;)
