Hi All, this is my first post, I hope maybe one of you can help me.
I have had my Freelander TD4 for a while now with no probs..... until today ! Had total loss of power at speed, pulled over to find header tank full of black oil, is this head gasket failure ?(I know it's uncommon on TD4's) Can it be anything else? Will it have done untold damage to my pride and joy ?

Hi mate own Disco myself definatly sounds like your head gasket is gone! Not sure if this is true or not but i've been told that if the head gasket goes on my TD5 engine you CAN'T skim the head not sure why, your's maybe the same with the TD4 engine.

Could be oil cooler failure if full of black oil,
Has the Pressure delimiting valve / filter been replaced this can cause excessive internal oil pressure if not renewed

I had the same thing happen, was ****ting myself as I had only replaced the HG in our 1.8 a month before. Oil cooler had failed pushing all the oil into the coolant, this caused the engine to overheat and burst a radiator hose. Caused a huge mess. I'd pull off your oil cooler first and check that. let me know how you get on.

Hey, Thanks a lot you guys, just taken off the oil cooler and tested and you're right, it's buggered ! I think you may have saved me lots of time and money! If you're ever in my part of Hampshire I'll buy your beer all night! Thanks again chaps you are stars! :D

I'm bloody sure they would, I dread to think how much they would have charged, thanks again, my weekend has been made !

mike, good to know its just the cooler thats failed,
was it easy to see where it had gone , is it repairable?, how much for new one ? and what pub in hampshire will we find the free beer:D

Hi, I tested the oil cooler by appling water pressure with a hose, the water side leaked into the oil.Doesn't look to be repairable but could be wrong.Been quoted £68 +vat for new one (brooklyn4x4) which I'm quite willing to pay considering I thought it was going to be a head gasket job ! The Pub......The Boot Inn near Stockbridge, they're on me! Cheers!
