Td4: Gearbox (Getrag 282) filler plugs

Has anyone used longer filler/drain plugs or ones with magnets on the gearbox in their Manual TD4 Freelanders (year 2001)?

Basically, the original filler plug was completely rounded (requiring a drill and straight screw extractor to shift - was stuck on like glue!) and the drain plug was in only slightly better condition.

I know the official part number for the filler/drain is TRL100700L.

I was in Halfords today and saw one of their sump nut kits (HSP609) that looks like a pretty good match. Fits the thread okay, is the right width but is a lot longer.

LR Part: 17.3 / 17.4 mm long
Halfords part: 20.4 / 20.5 mm long (plug only) or 25.7 mm long (plug and magnet)

The Halfords one comes with a copper washer that'll eat up some of the difference (maybe 1mm when compressed).

It seems to screw in fine all the way and I like the idea of having the magnet given I had to drill out the last plug

Has anyone used this plug on their Freelander? Any problems or advice?
Anyone know the actual clearance between 'the bits' and the case in the gearbox?

Any advice appreciated.... I have the feeling this might be an awful idea.... but am still tempted... :scratching_chin:

I got a IRD filler plug and washer from L R , was not expensive

Not to pointlessly drag up my old thread, just to update:

I got two genuine filler plugs in the end - compared them to the old 'original' filler plugs that had been rounded/so difficult to remove.... and the 'originals' certainly weren't 'original'. They had a washer/seal on them, were substantially longer than the plugs I got from LR and seemed to be made of a completely different metal. Have high hopes my new genuine filler/drain plug won't seize quite so solid!
