I’m changing the gearbox oil in my 10p TD5 and I thought I had all the correct plugs, at least according to lrworkshop.

This is what I’ve got:
https://www.lrworkshop.com/parts/FRC6145

But now I’ve got down there to do it it’s some kind of female type plug which looks like it takes a 1/2” socket, like a smaller version of the filler plug. It looks I’m looking in the right place according to my Haynes manual and a YouTube video I watched. It looks like the later FTC4056 but that takes a star bit. The plug in there appears to be a bit smaller than the one I’ve bought as well.

Anyone know what’s going on here? I need this to drive to work so I don’t want to take it off and find that I need a new plug. Where I live (Africa) it can take several weeks to get parts delivered unless I want to pay the sky high prices from the LR dealer.

I know Londons getting a bit multicultural these days but calling it Africa seems a bit OTT ...

Don't you have the R380 L68A gearbox in your early TD5 ?
I think the Defenders had a female Torx (FTC4056) and the discovery a female allen (hex), there is also the magnetic version (TYB500070 ) which has a square hole.
Why do you need a new one ??

Didn’t know I was 40 either.

It occurred to me as I was lying in bed last night that I may not actually need a new plug as well, but I like to renew these things when it’s cheap and easy to do so, but also because it appears that somebody’s bodged it in with the wrong part. Are the hole’s all the same size? Why do some of these parts have the copper washer and others not? Was it deemed not necessary?

I’ll take a look at the square hole Discovery one, sounds like I may have that.

Edit
Sorry, to answer the first question it’s an R380 but that’s all I know. I assume it’s the gearbox that came with the vehicle because it’s on the documentation, and it’s a 2000 110 TD5.

Ah well, you would have filled that bit in when you 'joined' as it's your profile :)

It's unusual that you would need to replace the bung.
They can be the same hole/thread, occasionally the drain bung is different.
A new copper washer is advised as this provides the seal between the casting of the gearbox and the machined face of the bung.
I tend to use the existing copper washer if it's not overly compressed/thin.
I stick it on my welding bench and anneal it with a blowtorch, it takes just a few seconds to notice the colour change and then (after its cooled) put it back on.
Two or Three uses seems to be OK unless Mr Universe has tightened it up and it's mangled.
You can also get alluminium and fiber washers, these I tend to renew every time.

Yes, some of the R380s didn't have the large external hex drain plug. I had one like this with the ultra-rare and desirable small drain plug. It has the same thread as the filler plug, and you can use one of these if the kind with the square recess is unavailable. The hex plug has a larger thread and is not interchangeable.
