hi all

i would like your advise on something, im looking to buy a little boat, just something about 16ft? i have no idea but im guessing a ton and a halfish? im assuming the 2.0TD4 freelander will pull it with no problems? id appreciate any help that will shed some light on the subject?

much appreciated

My Caravan is 1.6 tonnes and my Td4 pulls that very well. You can legelly tow up to 2 tonne however it is not advisable to tow something which weighs more than the car does. Hope this helps !

Some one who works for land rover said car can pull a maximum of 3 tons but when tested by land rover in mexico city the quality of the air caused problems. As land rovers are meant to work all over the world the towing capacity was reduced for this reason, doesnt mean it can pull 3 tons here in the UK! Although saying that Freelanders are fragile wouldnt want to blow the engine!

The problem isn't the pulling, the problem is the stopping! Caravan Club advise towed weight should not exceed 85% of towing vehicle and personally I think that makes sense especially when going downhill!

The caravan club dont know the ins and outs of the Freelander and how it has been tested during the design and test stages. LR recommend 2 tons as the maximum limit the vehicle will have no problems handling this at all.
Freelander will tow 3 tons in uk with ease but its not a clever thing to do as the Freelander can be a fragile machine. Freelander can also stop fine with a two ton load on the back. This will be no problem unless you go off roading towing behind you 2 tons and go down a huge 45 degree slope with HDC on, might be a bit dangerous!

My hope is that any 2 ton trailer with its out of the ark mechanically operated brakes manages to stop in a straight line when something goes wrong on a busy motorway. Pulling is the easy bit.

The maximum trailer weight for a TD4 is 2000kg, the maximum gross train weight (car and trailer) is 3880kg. If you load the car to its maximum gross weight of 2080kg, this only allows a trailer weight of 1800kg.

I have seen boats being towed up slipways by BMW 3 series with the Td4 engine.

For a rear wheel drive car they make it look effortless, not bad for a German motor LOL

Make sure you are familiar with towing boats and launching/recovery techniques. Im sure there are boating forums out there.

Td4 will breeze through towing a 16ft boat
