So my 1995 P38 auto 4.0 would take notions going from P to D/R etc where it wouldn’t know what gear it was in and generate a gearbox fault. Cycling the gears and then a restart would always clear it but I figured I’d try and fix it today to tick one more job off the list. Pulled the switch out (it’s an early one, 0501 209 535) and after drilling out the rivets to split it I found inside was gross, reminded me of a blocked U bend in our bathroom there was to so much rubbish in it! Anyway, cleaned it up contact cleaner, blew it out with some compressed air and resealed the whole thing back together. Looked mint. Made sure it went on in exactly the same position as it came out and went back in with no issues.

Fire the ignition on and now both the dash screen and the gear indicator red light both think it’s in 3rd all the time regardless of the position of the gearstick. There’s no error or anything generated and at least both indicators are agreeing! Moving the stick moves the shaft on the box as it should and everything looks ok. Im assuming I’ve damaged something inside the switch. Before I pull it out again to go back through it again and likely replace with a known second hand unit can anyone shed any light on what *might* have gone wrong?

Thanks!

I would guess that you have either damaged the wipers in some way, left a part out or somehow removed the tension on the wipers.

I threw a photo up on one of the Facebook groups I’m on and I’ve been advised that part of the inner wheel has been broken off!? Not sure how as Nothing fell out but I guess that accounts for all of the little tiny bits inside that I mistook for aluminium corrosion. I’ve ordered a second hand part to replace it so this will do as spare parts I guess.
