Freelander 1 Td4 engine replacement

Hi
Thinking I may have to replace my existing td4 as can't cure the smoke
Been trying and done loads so gotta change it
Questions are
Do i need a.new ecu ?
Best way to do the job ,top or below and out ? Have engine crane etc here

Ecu can stay for replacement engine.
I took my Td4 out the top but had to move the auto box over anyway. Manual would not come out this way without box removal due to clearances with clutch etc.

If I did it again, front subframes off, drop the engine, box and IRD and dismantle with greater access!!

What kind of smoke is it, black or blue, grey, and how bad is it, what have you tried to cure it.

Grey smoke,white smoke ,
Changed turbo,maf filter,injectors, injector wiring sensor ,air filter, nee inket manifold filter under air filter etc etc
Will idle.ok but when you hit the pedal smoking, runout of money and time now

Simply throwing parts at an engine without proper diagnosis isn't the way to go.

Have you checked the boost pipes are perfect, and not split or collapsed internally?
Have you checked the boost pressure under all running conditions?
Have you checked the fuel rail pressure under all conditions?
Have you checked the parts you've fitted aren't faulty, adding to the issues?

In my experience replacing part after part is a road to an empty bank account, and disappointment.

How about the glow plugs, how old is the fuel filter, is the smoke just on start up or does it continue after, and is it worse under throttle, is the fuel contaminated,

Grey smoke is unburnt diesel. Turbo normally black smoke.
Could be injector issue, over fuelling or timing issue.
