I'm currently trying to diagnose an ongoing issue with my facelift TD4, its the one with a lp pump and filter in the wheel arch.

Does it have any sort of filter/strainer in the tank?

If yes, how do I access it and clean or replace it?

Thanks!

Is it common to have to clean this gauze?

I removed mine when the car was 4 years old ad covered around 50k and the strainer was clean.

When refitting dont slide the rubber sealing ring around the pump/sender unit as it wont fit back in, instead place the sealing ring into the tank aperture then slide in the unit and it will fit fine.

Depends on how you use the car, if you regularly refill when at almost empty then you run the risk of the pump sucking up any dirt/crap in the bottom of the fuel tank. This is what I think killed my in tank pump on my 2002 TD4 (twin pumps). I now refill at 1/4 mark now just be extra careful.

Totally different car/tank but my old Alfa 75 fuel tank rusted away at the seam where the halves were welded together - the crap in the bottom of that fuel tanks was scary!

Don't forget the sedimenter that is with the pump/filter unit. It should be drained occasionally.

I did that when I had the whole rear assembly off the vehicle to change the filter. Didn't flush it through though....

Ive attached a few pictures of my 2005 Freelander fuel pickup and strainer.

Easy to remove just follow Haynes book.

Sorry should have explained. The left hand picture is the bowl taken off the bottom of the sender unit. The right hand picture is the strainer that goes inside the left hand bowl. Without explaining myself very well was trying to show what the sender unit looks like when it is taken apart.
