TD 5 Fuel pump locking ring

When replacing a TD5 fuel pump are there any tricks to refitting the ring that holds it in? I've had to deal with this type of fixing before on other cars and it's always been a pain but this one really is not playing ball, even standing on it does not seem to get the top far enough in to be able to start the ring, the sealing gasket seem to be just that bit too thick, although I have yet to try the original one

you need to fit the seal to tank and carefully push the unit through it, noting the locating tag at 3 oclock, it its correct you should be able to press unit fully home against the springs with one hand whilst you start locking ring with the other

Is that a tag on the seal or the pump? I am having to relay this to my dad although I guess its similar to the V8 pump so I should go an look at the one I have!

Guess what order I got wrong and struggled with for a couple of hours when I was changing my fuel pump!
