Tail lights not working - maybe from leaking sunroof?

Hi all,
So I've got a leaky roof in my Discovery 2 ES - I took the headlining down to take a look and bought some non-OEM sunroof seals but they didn't fit (buy cheap, buy twice!). I took out and cleaned the current seals which seemed to be in good condition anyway. The drainage system looked in good condition, but after some heavy rain it's still leaking quite a lot. More investigation needed!

Anyway - my tail lights have now stopped working. Reverse, brake, indicators are all good, but left and right the tail lights don't work. The fuses are fine (and interior lights work which are the same circuit). Looking at the cabling today, it seems to go upward towards the roof, so I'm thinking the two issues might be related.

Interestingly, if I plug the left light cluster into the right connector and vice-versa, the reverse light comes on. Not sure if this is relevant, or whether the lights work with a constant voltage with a switched earth.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar, or got ideas where to check? I was thinking if it's just a bunch of cables going from the rear to the front that water probably wouldn't affect it, unless there was a connector or suchlike along the line in the roof where it could get wet.

Thanks in advance.

the only common connector for the tail lights is not on the roof... they are separate circuits/fuses, they split from C0484/0102 pins 1 and 2 from there two direct wires are going to the lamps(red/orange trace and red/black trace)

Thanks for this - where is that connector located? I'll have to put a multimeter on it to see what voltage is arriving at the light cluster and confirm there's voltage at the fuse box when I'm back home at have my tools available.

did you undo the sunroofs and clean all the surround and re seal them with a good quality low mod silicone etc?

Hi, no, that's what I'm going to have to do next time - didn't realise that needed to be done until I'd done some more research after finding it wasn't the seal or drainage plug. I unbolted the glass, cleaned up the contact area, removed the seal, cleaned it, then put it back in and bolted the glass back in.

I think I need to remove the motor/mechanism as well as the surround, then seal it back up as you say. My front motor is jammed too - can't even open it with a manual key, so suspect it's all rusted tight too. PITA!!

it is the only way, rub a little vasaline on the seals, it makes them supple, better seal

Don't use Vaseline, it's petroleum jelly and the petrol element will rot rubbers. It's not going to happen overnight and it MIGHT not rot this particular type but when you can use silicon grease and KNOW that it's not going to have any detrimental effect it's not worth taking the chance.
