When did land rover start using the grease in the hubs rather than the oil, mine was in for a service last year and they mentioned the seals could do with replacing as there was a minor leak and it could get worse, damp spot basically...Could I just use the one shot grease instead?

Once the seal is fubar even one shot will still escape though!

It is a simple job to replace these seals, some will tell you to cut them and once in place put the cut to the top, I don't.

I was taught my way by a good friend. Jack up, wheel off, undo brake caliper and tie out the way, disconnect the steering rod. Then behind the hub there is a ring of bolts that hold the hub to the axle, undo these and remove the whole hub and half shaft then stick it shaft up into a builders bucket.

This allows you to then remove the ring round the seal, pry the seal out and replace. The whole job takes about an hour.

Yes you can fit grease but you can't escape from the fact that your seals have failed and therefore need replacing. If oil can escape then water and other nasties can get in which will do nothing for the long-term condition of the interior of the swivels & bearings.
Fix the problem rather than the symptom.

Good point,well made. ;)

Quickest way is to replace the seals asd described above.
Personally i prefer to strip the full lot down doesnt take long and usually you find other things that might need to be replace or cleaned up.You can re grease the wheel bearings and adjust them. Best to change the upper and lower bearings while your changing the seals. The service kits inclusding the seals etc are about £20 and this usually includes the grease.
