trying to take the play out on the swivel by removing a shim but have ended up with far more play than when i started as the top pin will not seat down on the shims,put it all back how it was but there is a gap about 4mm between the bottom of the pin and the shims.i have even tried refitting with no shims or bearing (flat needle rollor)and still have a gap.am i doing somthing wrong or is it possible the bottom bearing fell apart when i took the top pin out?

it is ,but are you actually seating the top correctly ,its best to support bottom of swivel housing with a jack or similar when removing/refitting top pin, dont jack too far so as to apply force that wont let you move top of housing a little
