Hi there. Anyone willing and able to help a damsel in distress? My landy has a couple of persistent problems which the local dealership have attempted to fix before only for the problems to re-appear. I don't believe that they ever check the most basic things, trouble is, I don't know how to do that either...

It is a 1998 Defender TD5 110 CSW:

1. The ABS/TC lights are stuck on. This happened a couple of years ago, the local garage said it was the ABS tracking valve and fitted a new one at great expense. The problem has come back and I wonder if it might be something simpler like a dirty sensor?

2. It failed it's MOT last summer on emissions due to 'excessive black smoke under load'. They gave it a new intercooler, but it still coughed and spluttered a bit even after passing the MOT. All of a sudden it's gotten worse to the point of being embarrassing. Definitely won't pass an MOT in its current state.

If anyone is willing to come round and have a look at it I would be so grateful and will pay you for the trouble. Also there will be cakes.

PS. I should have said, if it's easier for me to come to you I can do that. Despite the aforementioned issues she still starts and stops perfectly well.

Thanks!

Cant believe you haven't had any replies, a female and offering cake :eek:

Cant really help other than ask if anyone has checked the fuel supply. When my Defender coughed and spluttered it was some muck in the fuel which got into the filters. It got really bad when a bit got stuck in some pump or other. When it was all cleaned out and new filters I never had a problem again.

Oh and the sensor things on my old Landy used to bring the light on when they came out of the holders or whatever. All you had to do was push them back in.

Now if this piece of non technical crap does not shame someone who knows what they are doing to help you - I give up :D :D

10 replies and a move to another section and the poor girl still hasn't got any offers of help or useful advice :p:eek::D

Maybe I should've changed the title to 'Fit burd needs manly pair of hands' ;)

I know fookall about Td5s and avoid London as much as possible but even I'm tempted now :p

South London is a big place. Maybe if we knew roughly where you were?
Change the fuel filter and air filter first.
Make sure the EGR is not stuck open. In fact remove the poxy thing altogether.
Disconnect the MAF sensor in the air intake and see if that makes a difference. If so you need a new one.
Clean the MAP sensor in the intake manifold. They get bunged up by the EGR crap.
I have solved the three amigos (brake,TC,ABS) lights on mine and one other defender by pressure bleeding the braking system and using a Nanocom to cycle the shuttle valve while bleeding. No expensive bits and pieces needed despite what LR service techs said.
