Just pulling away from a car park after a day out, having left the car at access height. Was about to go over some grass so thought I'd stick the EAS straight to high. Not at all necessary, but I like it when she's standing tall going over bumpy ground.

Anyway, no sooner had I hit the switch and begun to pull away, a loud POP came from the near-side front wheel and that whole corner dropped like a stone.

Now sitting waiting for the RAC, not wanting to drive on the bump stop on one corner an hour away from home.

Just venting my frustration at this happening really. :(

I'm willing to bet they're original, the car's a 2003. I'm just wondering if I'm doing the right thing having the RAC come get me as technically the car will still drive. Don't want to make matters worse though!

sounds like one of your air struts has split. very common if they are still the originals. still drivable if you go slowly.

easy fix to change the struts. id change both sides together

where is essex are you based ?

Hello mate - bought a set of wheels off you for my old P38 :)

I'm on my way back in a recovery truck now. I'm based in Canvey Island.

oh yes i do remember !

how you been keeping Marc ?

guessing you have got shot of your P38 now and got an L322 to keep you busy ? :D

cheapest place to get new struts would be from island4x4

cheers :)

Good thanks buddy - still have you in my phone as "Ellis Wheels"

Funnily enough only just sold the P38 yesterday, having had it in the garage for a year as an as-yet-not-started project. Got to a point where I hadn't touched it in so long it didn't make sense to keep it. Bought the L322 a year ago (hence the P38 going in the garage).

Annoyingly it's booked in for its MOT on Wednesday, so looks like I'll need to re-arrange things unless I can get the airspring(s) / struts changed in time. Being a bank holiday doesn't look too likely - emailed Island 4x4 earlier this morning to see if I can go collect.

The most frustrating thing is that until yesterday I had two roadworthy RR's, taxed & insured, all to myself. And now I have none! Guess I'll have to use the wife's Alfa. Cor I do like reliable cars me... :p

They are very reliable when they are parked in a garage for a year;):)

My front two went within days of each other and the first within hours of buying the car, I replaced both of mine from island 4x4 with dunlops, quite east fit if you have a decent jack. don't unwind the connector from the new one just chop a small piece off the end of the old air tube where it fits into the existing strut and push fit into the new strut. Main dealer only wanted £900 to change ONE..

why don't you recommend unwinding the connector air tube ?

I take it Dunlops are ok? I'm not going to suffer with poor ride quality not going with a non-Land Rover genuine part (who are quoting £400+vat per part, with an apparent list price of £600 - so they suggest I'm getting a good deal).. !! ??

You ride on the air in the bag not the bag itself.

L322 ride quality is crap anyway so whichever bags you fit is not going to make much difference, about £260 is I think the best price per leg.

Same happened to mine few weeks back got 2 dunlops for £400 fitted them myself took a couple of hours , then £25 to get the alignment checked , don't cut the air pipe undo the whole fitting and fit into the new bag as they can cause leaks don't let the car down with no air in the bags , I supported it on jacks til the bags filled and lifted it off the jacks , it's an easy diy job . There's a video on you tube of it .also mark the position of the 3 top bolts to help alignment after wards .

Thanks for the advice. Dunlops ordered from Island4x4 late yesterday, should be arriving tomorrow. I've fitted Arnott's all round to a P38 before so will hopefully be a similar job, difficulty-wise.

I suspect you will find doing a front strut on an L322 is a tad more difficult than a P38 but not too bad.
