I had a couple of hours in my garage this afternoon and was playing with some new SuperBright LED’s I just got.
For the record:
5mm superwhite
3500 – 5200 mcd
3.5v 20mA
80 degree
I cut, drilled, and shaped 4 pieces of plastic into clips that fit into the cut-outs under my bonnet. I then put 3 LED’s (series) and a resister in each one to make them 12v. I snapped them into the cut-outs under the bonnet and wired them up to one of those adapters for the cigar lighter. I tested them and they lit up fine.
The shock came about an hour ago as I went outside after dinner to see the light in the dark. My complete engine compartment was lit up like daytime. I knew that these lights were about 5 to 7 times stronger than the ones I had used before but had no idea twelve together would produce such results.
Total cost of the project
12 LED’s @ 60p each + 4 resisters (75 Ohm) @ 3p each = GBP 7.32 and a couple hours of work.
I don’t have much need to lift the bonnet in the night (thankfully) but I am prepared. I figure that all 12 of these diodes together use less than 20% of one dome light (5A) in power.
I am not an electrician and this job was really easy to do.
I do have one problem with it – the cord that I have to stick in the cigar lighter. I would like to hook this up to that push button switch under the bonnet (I think the alarm). Is there anyone out there who could tell me if these lights can be hooked up to that switch without affecting the alarm and if so how?
