Stupid Question

I have noticed that when I put high beam on when driving I have an expanse
of darkness at low level..

Sidelights work well..
Headlights on low beam work well..
Pull stalk back gently and both Low & High show giving good vision..
Pull stalk back so it clicks and high beam is selected and the lower section
goes out..

Surely this is not right??

Shouldn't the high & low stay on when the stalk is clicked back??

Any advise would be great..

Mine was the same mate, I'm sure it's just the face lift where the dip beam stays on.

Is it the headlight design or is it the bulb/lamp configuration,

If its the headlight it self then there must be a way to allow
both High and Low to be used together??
for them dark places out there..

I believe it's because the high and dipped beam are in the same bulb, it would get to hot and continually blow bulbs if both were on at the same time. The facelift has 2 separate bulbs.

so what stops it??
is it just a relay or would the headlight need to be modified??

It's the same with all cars using the 472 halogen bulb
As said if both filaments were on at the same time, the bulb would overheat and fail pretty quickly.
There are separate relays for dip and main, the column switch controls what relay is on and when.

Maybe you can fit a facelift front end and get the separate bulbs?

Having both filaments on at the same time is not a good idea.

In some ways the Facelift is better than my old Yeti, which had bi-xenons, for the same reason. It was either dipped beam or main beam.

This will explain why spot light are so popular on the pre-facelift Freelander 1..

Fit a pair of Osram Night Breakers. They are miles better than standard halogen headlight bulbs. My V6 is fitted with a set, my headlights produce crisp bright white light. Easily as good as most modern headlights.

Indi, have you tried the osram nightbreaker plus bulbs? I found they made a big difference.

As I said the low beam is fantastic, its just the loss of light output you get
when selecting full beam..

Spots or DRL on all the time will do the trick..

My lights are shee-ite. They seem really low even on the highest adjustment.
Even the full beams aren't that great.
Probably needs some kind of adjustment somewhere.

I'v been using Night Breakers for years. They are far better than standard halogen bulbs. I expect something needs adjustment as my dip beam lights illuminate the road for 100 yards ahead. Mains illuminate the road for an easy 500 yards or more.

Is your light beam adjustment switch fully up?

I vote for Phillips Extreme Vision 100% + every time. I've used the Osrams and think the Phillips have the edge.

I have spotlights on mine & they light up the trees!
But the high beam is easily enough to illuminate everything.
I'd check your headlight adjustment first before splashing out on new bulbs.

Living "Out in the sticks" I have 130/80W headlamp bulbs and 130W Spot lamp bulbs (Come on with main beam).
Swapped the Nightbreaker for the higher wattage headlamp bulbs and I am more than satisfied with the difference.
Even though the dipped beam wattage is higher, I have never had an issue from oncoming drivers or the annual MOT.
No signs of the perspex headlamp lenses melting into a blob either !!!

iv just bought the night breaker ones, tried them compared to some halfrauds bulbs and there isnt much difference apart from abit whiter.
