Just spraying Salisbury plain mud out the rads of my disco 2. Noticed that the air con fan appears stuck. Can not rotate it with a srewdriver poked in.
I am presuming there is no clutch like the compressor and should be free to rotate. Presume its just seized. Is my assumation correct?

Recently as you may have seen in another post have fitted a digital temp guage. For the last few weeks it has read 84 to 87. On sunday it was topping out at 97. I put this down to rad being caked in muddy water that set like concrete. Also the transmission oil temp came on.
So will check the transmission oil. Cooler and perhaps sensor.

Good old Land rover just keep on giving us jobs to do.

Sounds like its seized, rad fins look fooked as well, someone has had the pressure washer at them at an angle.

Is the viscous fan still working?

Just had a look £140 for a new fan. Ouch.
If im doing the job a new one it will be. Oh well.

Yes the fins are a bit dubious. I suppose they would stop some air flow through to the intercooler and eventually the coolant rad. At this stage not hoping to change it but may pop out the coolant rad to flush out properly.

Right after lying under car in a puddle of water from the hose ive been using whats the secret of the transmission cooler location. Could not locate it. ?
Have to have a better look tomorrow.

Whilst there is there any benefit in using the space to the side of the air con fan to mount a small cooling fan in addition. Just wondering.

Why not just replace the a/c fan with a universal one? they are under 30 quid from ebay etc.

Like this, so cheap who cares if they dont last?

Tbh had not thought that quick. Always a bit slow off the block. Im the sort of guy who gets a joke from 5 mins ago.
You are right. After all it must only be a couple of wires.
Investigation tomorrow....

Ta.

Thank you for the reference numbers will remove the old one and see what can be done with fixing it.

Just my 2p worth, you can also get the PM9261 motor from RockAuto, rockauto.com, in the US. They ship to the UK at quite reasonable cost. I'm going to need to replace mine too! Also, check the fuse (can't remember which one right now) in the engine bay fuse box as this will probably be blown too.

Two tdis, both with 16 inch universal cooling fans, both been on for the best part of 8 years maybe longer.
One has been sunk in mud and gloop many times, sometimes over the top of the engine, it is now getting noisy but still does the job, well worth the 30 quid it cost.
The other one is as quiet as the day I fitted it, but it does get a much easier life.

Thanks all. Lots to think about. Can deffinetly confirm the ac fan is dead. Got it off eventually after using a dremel as bots rusted up.
Fan seized solid. Managed eventually to get the cover off the back but not a pretty sight.
Also the fins on the condenser are just dissolving. Touch them and they seem to dissapear.
So new condenser will be fitted as well.
Whilst there the intercooler and the rad will be coming out so bit of work to be done.
Will need to pop down my friendly classic garage for a degas and get to work.
Thanks you and all.
Always the answeres.

A Td5 is a completely different story when it comes to aircon or cooling, i've tried myself universal fan from ebay and once the pressure built up the aircon was most of the time disabled by the dual pressure switch than active

Eventually got all back together. New condenser , dryer and i must admit a universal fan. Rad and intercooler out to be washed out, with the confusion in my other thread regarding the revised hose connectors from the diesel cooler sorted.
Bit of a fiddle but all done.

Also replaced the bonnet cable for obvious reasons in photo.
Thanks for your help.
Appreciated as always.
