Hi all,

I've been looking through as many of the posts and threads that I could find on this subject but I might just need a little help with a few things please.

The air con stopped working at the end of last summer and I'm now looking into the cause, and I can see that the compressor clutch is not operating as it should when I set the auto to below the ambient temp. I have checked the fuse and relay by swapping with the horn but that's not the issue I think. Also given it a tap to see if it was seized but I can easily move it by hand.

I found out how to do the diagnostic check which revealed the result of 21 and 22 fault codes, which indicates a fault in the sunlight sensor left and right. That said my car is outside and in strong direct sunlight and it still returns the same fault codes.

Ok, so does that mean without doubt that the sensor has failed and needs to be replaced? I have had a new compressor fitted within the last year due the bearings having collapsed and the pipe work has been replaced recently and shows no sign of leaks. I have fitted a new electric fan as mine had seized which is normal. That works and cuts in when the engine temp is very warm which it is here at the moment (35 degrees).

I do not have an air con pressure testing kit but when I took off the cover to the filling joint and pushed the seal ball in a tad it hissed which I think means there's at least some pressure in there. I'm not sure whether low pressure in the system whould show the 21/21 fault code and therefore not allow the compressor to cut in?

Sorry for such a long post but before I go to a French garage to have them charge me a fortune and not really know any more about it than me I thought I'd see if anyone can help here.

Many thanks.

Sammys pal.

Hi, the sunlight sensor would not affect the compressor clutch, the clutch will not engage for 3 reasons:
1. low pressure(below 2.3 bar)
2. faulty dual pressure switch or related circuit
3. failed clutch solenoid

Brilliant. Thanks for the prompt and informative reply. Unless you know better I would suspect the pressure first and have that checked and refilled by a garage and after that would then need to check the other things you mentioned. If I can get the clutch engaging again then I suppose I could look into the fault code situation later?
Cheers.
