Evening,

I thought I’d do a simple job after lunch which has turned into a pig and it’s driving me mad as I don’t understand why?!!
I am installing bearings in n/s rear hub. Drifted out old races and fitted new bearing set. Tried with spacer, bearings felt too tight so I reverted to two nut.
Bearings set nicely, feel in then check no end float, sorted. When I put washer on and tighten locknut it’s making the bearing too tight.
Am I right in thinking, the only thing that can be happening is my locknut is gripping washer then washer is gripping adjuster nut and seizing it? I did try and grease up washer etc but didn’t help. I’ve just packed up and temp fitted the wheel until I can next get on it. @jamesmartin @Hicap phill - any wisdom?

Have you wound back a bit after nipping up?
I put hub on stub, nipped up to seat, wound back off then took the play out and had nice. The minute the second nut, I.e the one above the space it done up it knocks my setting out and makes bearings too tight

They are a pita, fit thrust washer the inner nut and lightly nip it up, back of nut 1/4 to 1/2 a turn (they are all different!) fit lock tab and outer nutn and tighten then check for play, do this multiple times until you are happy!
Give it a week or two and recheck, not uncommon for them to need adjusting again.

Thanks. My disco was done in Minutes. I got how I wanted on adjuster nut, then put washer and 2nd nut on and then was fine. This one though is a mate to the point I think I’ve got something very wrong!

Thinking about what you’ve said and didn’t actually try that as thought once my adjuster nut was in place it was all locked down and set.

The problem with the set up is, as you tighten the outer nut it pushes the inner nut inwards which then pushes agiinst the bearing so over tightening it, when I was a boy all the hgv trailers had this exact same set up, pretty much gaurantee every 6/8 weeks at least one of the wheel bearings would need adjusting, now 30 yers later and most are like modern car cassette bearings, and will easily do a million kms with no tlc at all.

You have saved my sanity. Seems my disco I got lucky on. Was all new stubs etc too which probably made things easier but I did work soo cleanly today. Everything was squeaky. So like you said, set it, then back it off to compensate for the extra load my locknut is going to put on adjuster?

Yes got boosts. Thanks for help both of you. I realize I get worked up over small things! It’s very frustrating when you put so much money and time into these.
That’s why I have steel LR wheels. I can pop the stub out & nip up easily. Also it fees different with the rims on.

no worries on help just shout. Keeps me amused & active

I’m not fussed about mine being pretty at the moment and doubt I will be in future. I’d like some wheels like my disco wheels on it (modulars?) one day. The thing is costing a lot to get it up to scratch though so they aren’t a biggie. Yes, would be nice to just be able to pop it off and adjust!

Nope... I do it by touch. I know it sounds mad but Iv not had any problems.
I pack well with grease.

what I’m getting at is that my adjuster nut is getting adjusted by my locknut as lynall states above. Obviously the tighter I go the more it will lock up the adjuster below it. Think wsm is 50 or 52. So it’s like I’ve got to compensate on the adjuster nut for the 52nm that goes into the locking nut. If I hadve nipped up the locking nut it would’ve been fine but assumed it needed to be 50 odd to secure it

Are you reusing the lock washer?
No burrs on the nut faces?
They were fresh but not so fresh now! That’s what I was thinking - was there friction causing one to catch the other - it only has to turn it from 12 to 2 o clock to knock it out. I checked the washers and nuts and put grease on their faces to rule this out

I might be wrong here, but thinking about your puzzle the problem might be - new bearing on and adjusting nut in place etc blah blah, if there is any slack in the threads the adjuster nut will be at the outside of the thread. Fit tab washer and then lock nut and this will (perhaps) force the adjusting nut hubwards taking up that little bit of slack in the thread and forcing the adjuster nut into the hub by I dunno, perhaps 5 thou or so. Just a guess.

Just sensible tight will do, once the nut is tight it will have shunted the inner nuts thread free play up so job done, once lock tabs bent over it aint going anywhere, also just bend the tabs enough so they come off easy next time.
I think td5 onwards they went with one nut and a crush tube.
I have hammered the lock tab flat many times and reused them, new if I have them but old will do no worries.
