Struggling with bearing!

Td5 is spacer mate. When I used spacer method it pinched them too tight hence reverting to tdi method. If it pinched them too loose I could have worked out what spacer I needed on dti but they felt too tight so went with tdi two nut method hoping to have it done there n then! Gunna be flat out for couple of days so won’t get to do it but I’m going to check threads, check for burrs on all and then re - attempt!

The Tdi system is a bit of a fiddle. As I was reading the thread I started thinking burr then flossie suggested it. I don't think grease on the adjuster and lock nut is a good idea. As the lock nut winds on to the adjuster the grease will grab the adjuster nut and drag it around. Grease is extremely viscous and not friction free! I'd clean and decrease them, then you'll get immediate metal to metal contact between the two nut faces and, hopefully, the lock nut will just push the adjuster hard up against the thread and lock it in place instead of dragging it around with it.
I did my mates TD5 for him last year and it was laughably easy. Can you get a spacer set up for the Tdi? o_O

Just sensible tight will do, once the nut is tight it will have shunted the inner nuts thread free play up so job done, once lock tabs bent over it aint going anywhere, also just bend the tabs enough so they come off easy next time.
I think td5 onwards they went with one nut and a crush tube.
I have hammered the lock tab flat many times and reused them, new if I have them but old will do no worries.

I find that when I reuse the old ones, they come undone and cause the hub to leak. I refitted them 3 times over three nights to make sure I could get to work. Luckily, the third time I done the job, the new lock washers had turned up. I even used a medium strength loctite on the outside nut to try and stop it working loose, but that didn’t help.

Cheers guys. You can put the TD5 setup on 300tdi - its just a spacer and a stake nut and stub axles are same. The point of it is, you install the bearings with spacer and torque up the stake nut to 210. The spacer is then setting your bearing correctly for you rather than you feeling it in. With the correct spacer, there will be no end float but they bearings wont be too close as your spacer is keeping them.... spaced.

I have a td5 and reverted to twin nut due to the spacer making the new bearings too tight when I fitted new ones. Perhaps I'm being too picky and lack of experience plays a part but I was sure it felt too restricted. I'll be deburring and cleaning the faces right up to check ones not grabbing the other. Id actually bet that you could probably install the bearing with no spacer and the stake nut, feel the bearing into place and stake the nut. This isn't practice though.

There is a market for split type hub nuts as per some cars and some hgv trailers, you tighten the nut until you are happy, then nip up the little screw/s built into the nut and thats it, no movement after initital setting, also super fast as well.

Also ford versions, cheap as well, obviously to small, but you get the idea?

makes sense!!!

Did As discussed and put a drill sander bits over all faces. Seems to be bang on. Turned out the monkey hadn’t cross threaded my suspension mount - they’d used wrong pitch thread. Surely people who do **** like this know they’re doing it?? Also replaced rear struts and springs - first time I’ve snapped a strut bottom trying to get bottom nut off lol

I don’t mind the tdi two nut method, using a dti tbh. Did one today, and reused the lock washer, i just bend different bits over each time, I have two ‘unbent’ sections so that one more wheel bearing then it will need changing :D
