Stronv smell of smoke

Hi every one,
I have disco 2 td5 2004. Lately i smell a smoke during driving. The smell is strong enough so the vehicle behind me seems to smell it too. When i walk around the car while it running i feel that the smoke is strongest near the engine.
I have notice some smoke coming out of the engine around the first (far from the driver) bolt of the exoust manifold, it looks like i miss the bolt over there and it looks smoky black around there .Can a foulty manifold gasket couse the smell? Can it be a reasonable explenation?
I have to say that i dont see white/ black smoke coming out of the exoust or oil in the coolant res, my oil level at the stick is a bit (4mm) hi but stable with no fuel residue.

Check your exhaust system for leaks inc the manifold as you state

Is there a better way other than by watching?

Not really, you could try spraying soapy water on it but it will foam anyway due to the heat

Chances are you have a warped exhaust manifold. Only cure is to to take it off and get it ground flat again, and once that is done you could grind off the webs between each tube. Your biggest battle will be to replace the missing/broken studs.
I've been through this and it was no fun. But doable.
I think you'll find at least one thread on here all about it, it has happened to so many of us!
