Stripped my starter motor today, it had been turning over a bit on the sluggish side, quite a few hammer marks on the side of it, so I gather it had played up a bit before I got it. The brushes seem ok, free to move on the springs, the wiring for them doesnt seem too great, quite a few stray strands poking out here and there, I think I'll replace them anyway. It was quite filthy inside, carbon everywhere that I cleaned out. Are there any readings I can take on the rest of it. Or can anyone see anything obvious that is wrong with it that I am missing. There isnt a manufacturers plate or stamp on it either.

The commutater in pic 4 looks pretty grim, was the pic taken before you cleaned it?

I had brushed the loose carbon deposits away with a paintbrush, been looking at what to do with it, aside from getting it cleaned up on a lathe or polishing it with a bit of Emery cloth, a new one is the only other option.

Just cleaned it up with some contact cleaner and a bit of scotchbrite, thinking found the problem with it, 3bof 4 brushes were 14mm in length, the 4th was 10mm and the way it had been soldered to the post had made it stick a bit.

I don't think Emery cloth is recommended.

I would think new brushes and cleaned up, that will run again.
If you can get them, new bearings can't do any harm either, but the one I can see in the pic looks like it will still work.
