Hi All

Whilst driving down to Spain last week the inlet hose on my 2002 TD4 blew out???

On putting my hand over the hole I could feel the air coming out. the car lost power and kicked out black smoke under load.

I fixed the hole using a repair strip for an exhaust and a couple of nylon toggles and ordered a new hose on my return home.

On fitting the new hose I took of the busted hose and started the engine. I then put my hand over the inlet and felt the air blowing out.

This surely was wrong as the hose comes from the front grill and is an inlet hose?

A strange thing happened when I sealed of the inlet with my hand ??? The air flow reversed and started to suck.

I put on the new hose and took the car for a run and it feels much livelier

What is going on???

I have owned Land Rovers for 25 years and rebuillt everything from chassis to engines and this has me beat!

Any Brainiacs out there who could shed some light on this strange occurance

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Regards

Nick

it is confusing fer an earthling. . . .yer got an egr valve that recirculates hot burnt gases back into inlet at a certain rpm [spose to help wiff emissions] the cold inlet air mixes wiff it before combustion, this causes hot turbulence if your inlet gets a small hole the hot bit will seek that hole and chuck the air balance out [bit like a gasket gone on yer manifold] so that is why you get the black oil ****e pouring outa the hole. . . .:D :) :) ;)

Thanks for the info Ming, but a couple of questions from the un-initiated

You say that under revs the valve cuts in?

The engine was running at tickover when it changed from blow to suck at less than 1000 rpm.

Is it possible it did this because the valve was jambed open and the additionmal pressure added when I put my hand over the inlet free`d the valve.

Not easy for us mere mortals to aspire to your level of excellence

Any issues with your egr can be sorted by fitting a bypass available through ebay at around £50. It'll give you better economy & performance as well.

Thanks for the info, I will see what happens when I next give it the wellie and if there is a problem I will fit a bypass to both the car and myself to see if I get better performance and economy

it is possible . . . . just blank orft the vacuum pipe first before doing the blank mod as wot wez suggested by are learnid colleag chom:) :) :)

I did this mod on my BMW E46 320d ( which is also remapped )

Gave me nearly 4 - 5mpg average improvement , did not notice a huge improvement in performance however..........well worth the mod when you see what a bloody mess the EGR makes of your inlet manifold !!!

Will prolly do it to my Td4 as well sometime soon.
