Freelander 1 Strange starting problems

Currently have a Freelander 1 that doesn't start. Turn key, some clicks from relays, but nothing else no starter motor noise or turning.

This is a replacement starter motor as I had a very slow turning starter motor when i bought the car.
I have also purchased and installed a new ignition switch (the electric bit).

Checked 12V to big connector on starter motor - All good.
Checked 12V to small connector on starter motor when ignition key turned - All good.
Connected starter to battery directly - All good, spins up nicely.

Connected back to car loom and nothing, back to a few clicks and nothing else...........

Any ideas?

i wired a push switch on mine, battery live to one terminal other straight to starter solenoid, starts eveytime,

How does it work,,,Switch between battery +ve and solenoid( bypassing engine fuse box and starter relays) ignition to position ll, press button...all starts as normal

Sounds like its top of the list of "things not to do" - but it starts the car!

well its been like that for 4 years, inline fuse before button, it only energises starter solenoid so not much current drawn, switch off ebay or maplin, you can go the relay option but this works/ the idea is to start the car no use having a gaylander that wont start lol/ tuen ignition to 1 and press button and away with the gimbo, u can still start car with position 11 if ulike and not use button,but if u are having trouble on 11 position press the button,if u want to check if it is ignition switch, turn key to 1 out of gear and connect a wire direct to starter solenoid from battery for a sec, if its starts its usually ignition switch. dont stand in front of car incase its in gear lol

Here we go....

Connected the starter under load - Nothing, so maybe the battery is on it's way out.
New battery, connected the starter under load, turned the engine, yay.
Connected everything back up, turned the key - Nothing! I went and had a little cry in the corner.
Wired up a temp push to make switch on the dash - started beautifully. At least we are getting somewhere.
Finally found the starter relay. Gave it clean and wiggle, turned key - Started beautifully again. So I think the issue was a relay with bad contacts.....
Installed the old battery (which I had put on charge) Installed the old ignition switch. Turned the key - All good.

Success then. I think the culprit may have been the relay.

Now to try and get refunds for the bits I didn't need.....
