Hello,

Thank-you all for your help on my other questions. I had another strange issue start on saturday, ( used to weird issues as i had an alfa before) Basically i have a V8 discovery 2 automatic and i was in traffic and the revs send it be hunting and then it stalled on me/cut out put it into N and turned the key and it fired straight back up. I am going to change spark plugs etc the weekend as these do need doing but i wanted to see what else this could be i have done some searches online and people mentioning things from baseline calibration to spark plugs to some kind of controller on the autobox. Just wanted to see if anyone had any advice.

Thankyou in advance.
Best Regards
Neil

Engine stalling on idle has only happened to me twice, once back in my 3.5 days the other with the disco and both times it was down to a clogged crankcase breather, so worth a check.

When I use to feel a vibration in the steering wheel when idling I knew the engine idle was faltering so I stuck a bottle of injectior cleaner in the fuel, that's supermarket fuel for you, and the vibe soon disappeared. I'm still using supermarket fuel but now use injectior cleaner once a year so no further issues.

Change your plugs, but iffy plugs would give you a problem at other times, there's other things to look at or change but you maybe doing that in your "etc" so I won't bother to list, just let the forum know what u find.

Hello,

Thankyou for replying to my post, i will check the crankcase breather at the weekend the etc, is just oil and filters so nothing major. :) will wait until warmer dryer weather before i do major servicing on it.

Cheers

Without wanting to sound stupid this will be the first time i have done anything on this car, im not scared of getting stuck in etc previous car was an Alfa so not shy of getting the tools out :-D. But i just wanted to ask how easy is it to clean the crankcase breather is it a quick job?

Cheers

Simple just a bog standard breather, remove the hoses from both rocker covers and if they require cleaning just soak in petrol.

Gave those hoses a good clean out and appears to of sorted the issue. I wanted to ask another quick question. The throttle cables there is two? The rear one seems to do the throttle but what does the front one do? it appears to be really slack so assume its need adjusting but wanted to find out what it does first. I guess is it to do with Idle speed or something like that?
Cheers

Cable is for your Cruise Control, if working correctly forget about it, but for any adjustment required ...as below. More info if required can be found in the RAVE workshop manual.

1. Ensure that the throttle cable is correctly
adjusted.

2. Loosen outer cable locknuts.

3. Adjust the rear locknut to obtain a 0.5 to 1.5
mm (0.019 to 0.060 in) gap,
between the cruise control cable lever and the
throttle cable driven lever.

4. Tighten cable front locknut.

Went for a nice long drive yesterday and its really bad this morning. lots of investigation needed.

Anyone local to me Plymouth South Devon area with any diag tools who would like to scan it for some beer money
Cheers

Just wanted to update this, i changed all the spark plugs and the problem went away they looked like they had been in there for a fair old while previous owner obviously hadn't changed them.

This problem came back with vengeance this morning could hardly get out of my road to go to work this morning, a friend of mine suggested unplugging the maf if it happens again and see if it stops it. So unplugged the MAF and hey presto running like a dream. So dodgy MAF if it. Is it best to go for Bosch MAF or is a Bearmach one sufficent? Cheers
Neil

Well my saga with this continues i changed the MAF on saturday for a OE spec MAF put it in fired up and still the same Unplugged it and still the same misfire and irratic idle and just not happy at all. So last night i put the old MAF in connected it up and had misfire etc until i managed to get out of my road and then it seemed to clear so we went for a long 60 mile drive across dartmoor watched ISS go over aswell we stopped and started it a few times and all seemed to be fine again. This morning i have taken i to work and fired up perfectly no issues at all didnt miss a beat. So my question could this be something to do with a weak battery or the fact my commute which is like 2.5 miles doesnt charge the battery up enough or anything like that? The reason i took it for a long run last night was a friend mentioned the other night "i bet your battery doesnt really get charged with your commute" Any help / thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Neil

Correct, you won't replace what you have taking out of the battery in starting the engine in only 2.5 miles, more like 20 miles but once your engine has started the alternator takes over.
Even if the battery is low and only sufficient power just to spin the engine it should start straight away and run normally with out any issues.

Thank you for the quick reply. So doesn't look like the two are related? Really annoying me this issue, i have ordered a lead so i can hook my car up to scan for codes etc so hopefully this might bring a few leads on were i can look next.
Cheers
Neil
