My friend has a Freelander 1.8 petrol (2005) and it has developed an odd smell which tends to occur during motorway use. It smells like burning rubber or a "fishy smell". He says it seems to be after the underside was washed in an automatic car wash, but the smell has persisted for weeks now. I've had a look round and underneath but can't see anything. does anybody have any ideas as to what it could be?

Coolant getting into the cabin would be my guess. Heater matrix on the way out or connections to it.

With earlier post a burning (slipping) friction lining on clutch plate will produce a strange smell - a bit like overheated brakes - and takes forever to go away too.

Could it also be a brake binding?

we used to get a horrible smell of something rotten, noticed it more when reversing.

ever since i changed the clutch cylinder it seems to have gone, also we have a thing on the gearstick which i think is used for reversing uphill

it's got a picture of a car on an incline (car is facing downhill), and next to that is an upward facing arrow with an 'R' above it

and it's not like a switch as such, rocker switch, it's a sort of trigger which you pull in and the gator pulls down into position, then a green light comes on in the dash

It means that the hill is too steep - and yu need to select Reverse.
