Hi,

I have a 1989 3.5L V8 landrover 110, however there is a strange knocking/ticking sound, this only used to be noticeable whilst driving, but only when you accelerated, however now i can hear it all the time, more so when you accelerate. the noise is coming from the engine area on the passenger side, you can hear it allot more in the passenger seat than the drivers seat. wondering if its the gearbox???

If anyone has any ideas please let me know,

Cheers,

Scott.

You say you can here it all the time now, even when it is sitting idling? If that is the case then you should be able to rule out the gear box. But if it only happens whilst driving (and you can't get it to make the noise while parked, even acclerating the engine by hand.) If it only happens under load, try applying the parking brake and putting a load on the engine by popping the clutch slowly, if it happens then it is definately not the tranny and is in the engine. You need to rule out engine or tranny, then you know where to start.

Hi,

It makes the noise all the time, seems not to be the gear box, it just sounds louder when driving when accelerating.
When i start the landrover up, it is louder, i supose ths is because i have the choke out, and when i put the choke it, it is quieter again.

Could be several things... first off, can you tell if it is higher in the engine as apposed to lower? There are several components that can make a ticking noise. First off, valve gear. A poorly adjusted valve can cause ticking, or a valve gear (ie the adjustment bolt on the rocker gear) could be tapping on the valve cover (not sure if that is a common problem with those engines but it is with the 2.25 petrol. I assume being a 1989 that it is computer driven. Have you checked for error codes on the computer, could be computer related (I know this is not much help but not being a computer engine type guy I can only say try to rule out it being a computer problem, they can do funny things like readjust your timing for you to compensate for something else, causing issues and noises). Noting from above that you said it used to be only when accelerating I have to mention the horrible bottom end thing. Usually if it is definate knocking and usually on acceleration and load (or is worse with acceleration or load) there there is a good chance that it is a main bearing or connecting rod bearing (or bushing). Take a peice of wooden dowl (Assuming that you do not have a stethescope) and start to probe the engine. Put one end of the dowl on the block in different places and the other to the side of your head by your ear. You should hear the noise. Keep moving the dowl from place to place until you find where it is loudest (be careful that the dowl does not come in contact with any moving parts). When you find the loudest area you will have a better idea of where to start looking. As well might not be a bad idea to do a compression test if you can to ensure that it is not cylinder related (ie cracked ring or dropped valve, or something like that). Keep me posted. Hopefully someone will be along shortly that knows that engine better, and by then you should have a better idea of the problem. Andrew

Hi,

Cheers for the replys guys,

Its not computer driven.

However i will check out the rest of the bits you mentioned when i next get a chance.

Cheers,

Scott.
