Strange noise during gearshift

There's a new sound coming from my gearbox (I think) which is causing a metallic bong when i change gear from 3rd to 4th?
Happens like this;
clutch goes to the floor with a clonk, then shift from 3rd, bong, into 4th, clunk, engage clutch, clunk as drive taken up.
Any ideas? :)
 
nope - no slippage. There's some play at the top of the clutch pedal travel. No feel at all apart from return spring(guess). Clutch disengages gear about halfway down, and re-engages gear about 3/4 down (or 1/4 up)
 
sounds like mine, but all the ones I have driven are a little rough on the clutch, and no matter what you do its still a little lumpy/rough, as long as it works then I am happy, if its a major prob it will show its self in the end
 
but then if it is his g/box and not the clutch by the time it shows itself you could be looking at a new box instead of just a 10p spring..
 
ahahaha er.. how er.. um. Not really a bong - my ears were deceiving me, more of a clank, now that I really heard the sound when I listened.
followed your instructions slob - gear goes in about halfway down, and I need to lift only a little to get the beasteh moving.
 
It is about my left knee and directly below area - i think - hard to be exact when the engine is chugging away
 
mine clunks when changing gear but its never got any worse from 3rd to 4th. does it make a noise when the engine is running and in neautral and you put your foot on the clutch?
 
mine does as well, but I was talking to a guy the other day at work and he has owned land rover disco's for years, and he said he has never had one that is smooth through the gears. He said it dont matter what you do, lifting the foot slowly, more gas, it just makes no difference, they are always noisy and unsmooth.
 
they are more like a tractor gearbox,i,m going to put molyslip in mine when i do the servise it does help a little bit,had a car with really nothchy gearbox put molyslip in and it helped it. i put engine oil in the box on my racer but wouldnt recomend that for road driving
 
lol, good ole land rovers, and yeah a tractors gearbox is great description, I am having the machine serviced Monday by a landy guy, and I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be ok. I have a little list so far, tie bar bushes, cambelt, brakes, I can change all the fluids myself. But want a proper mechanic to look at what else maybe required.
 
Best thing to stop the noise I have found is to turn up the radio or wear ear muffs :)
Or ideally take the wife and kids on all trips in the Disco.
