My dads 84 110 has started to make a really strange noise that sounds like its coming from the back of the transfer box or handbrake drum thingy. Sounds like theres a stone or something as its a banging noise. Any help would be super

Thats me mums name good guess. So whats the prognosis then i hear UJ then stone or whatever. You guys used to give good advice busterbus was good now its the weekend so i guess its all drunk chatter. I need a solution quick as my dads on the verge of selling his landy because it always needs something doing to it.

You have been given 2 suggestions - the UJs, or a stone in the handbrake drum. Check the UJ's, if no play evident, then see if the handbrake has a stone in it - release the handbrake, and rotate the drum to see if it rattles. We can't diagnose it without more information, my land rover makes hundreds of baning noises, could be anything!

And no, i wasn't drunk, can't answer for anyone else though. I can think of lots of better things to do drunk than be on here.

I was on me way to being drunk but then I usually make more sense when I am. The point I was making was If it sounds like a stone in the drum why wouldn't it be a stone in the drum and why don't you have a look to see if it is what it sounds like before you ask the rest of the world to second guess what the problem is. My second second guess was what I imagine could sound like a banging or juddering from the hand brake drum which was the hand brake sticking on. But then Hughsey an Boydy's second guesses about worn UJs are also a probable cause for the noise you describe, you don't however tell us what speed your doing why the aforementioned noise occurs, so second guessing int that easy sober or ****ed.

It doesnt sound like a worn out UJ. But is it possible for a stone to be in the handbrake i really thought that wouldnt happen. But landrovers do get the weirdest problems so might have to strip the mcminge down

It would be a very simple task to get under there and have a look. What does a worn u/j sound like anyway? Might not be a stone in the handbrake drum but could be a bit of broken of metal or something. Anyhow it'll only take you 2 minutes to eliminate either thing.

bloody hell , does he want me to call round and have a look ! or better still do it for him, we can only suggest things mate. mine makes that much noise i cant hear the worn u/j anyway

When ye're hearin' these 'banging' noises, is it happenein' when it's in nuetral or in gear?
Where are you when the noises are happenin'... inside or underneath? Noises can carry and ye might be surprised tae find it's maybe comin' from somewhere's else.
Ah'd deffo check yer uj's first, get under the motor and get a grab of the prop near one end and give it a guid wigglin' back and forth, up and down and then try turnin' it watchin' all the joints (front and back)as ye do it.
Is there oil in yer boxes and axles? Is there grease in the props? Is there any play in the prop slidin' bit? Take the prop off and check.
While the props off have a look in the handbrake drum for any obvious signs of anythin' loose etc, and while yer there see if there's any play in any of the bearin's on the TF box.
Give it a go and see what's what and let us know how ye get on;) :D

can someone tell me where these magic stones come from? cos yerd be hard pushed to find a normal stone that can get into the h/brake drum
