Strange letter from the DVLA - still no log book

Bought a Defender at the start of the year and have been impatiently waiting for the V5.

Just got a letter from the DVLA asking me to confirm the registration number and VIN before they can deal with registration certificate. The letter came from the "Central Casework Group" at the DVLA.

Anyone else seen one of these and should I be concerned? I'm hoping it's just a random thing they do everynow and again.

Everything checks out as far as I can see, numbers match the logbook and MOT. I have done two car checks on the internet, all came back clear and matched the VIN they have recorded for the vehicle.
 
Only guessing (I've never bought a dodgy car) but there's probably at least 1 clone of your car out there somewhere.....?
 
I had the same thing last week with my Disco I bought in dec.
I rang them and it turns out someone else has applied for a reg doc for same plate in Jan.
I bought mine 20/12/10 the other guy has put down a date very early jan.
Checked all mine out with Vin and engine nos before i bought it and all seemed ok.
Only thing i wasnt sure off was it had a differant reg no etched on all the glass but the HPi came back with a plate change at some point.
Just have to wait now.

Just hope they dont want me to take it anywhere for checking out as it cant be driven.
They can come to me though.

I have at last heard back from the DVLA via a phone call and it’s not good.

They wouldn’t officially tell me anything but I did manage to put words it to their mouth and they did then open up a bit. Apparently the previous owner made some changes to the vehicle and had it inspected by the DVLA. Unfortunately they weren’t satisfied and said the vehicle must have an IVA test. At this point the previous owner did nothing, left it in his garage for a year and then decided to sell it on.

So I am now left with a problem that will need an IVA test which from what I can see will cost in the region of £600, plus loads of prep work and I’m sure I’ll find lots of non compliant bits that will absorb more money.

I am a bit surprised how the system allows people to get away with this, it’s possible to MOT & TAX a vehicle that cannot be driven on the road. Also all the car checks do not pick this up, surely there should be a big flag on the DVLA system saying all is not well. Either I am missing something or this is a major problem with the system.

On the bright side it is legally mine so will not be impounded or anything, just need to decide what to do with it now.
 
I would imagine the previous owner is liable..but good luck with trying to get that sorted..its been sold as not fit for purpose, you have a case but that wont get it on the road any quicker. I suggest you kill him.

smart arse - No I didn't to be honest. Take a look at the attachment, see if you can spot any:)


To be serious the DVLA say it was a chassis replacement which was not handled correctly.

IVA is the new SVA test I believe.

hi sorry didnt realise about the IVA, I guess what you do next depends on how much your in for ££££
I had a kit car that needed the old SVA test doing - I got rid quick

had an issue when i converted a petrol 90 to diesel, the daft women that i had to deal with couldn't get the idea in her head. took months to sort out. engineers report etc
